Careers in ICT

1.NETWORK ENGINEER
Network engineers are responsible for planning, designing , installing and
maintaining the equipment that makes up the network.Their work cover all
types and sizes of a network-LAN, MAN, WAN- as well as different types data,
including video and audio, as many computer networks now also handle
broadcasting and telephony.

Some duties include:


● plan and design the network
● Determine the network cabling requirements and layout
● oversee the installation of the network’s hardware and software
2.COMPUTER PROGRAMMER
Computer programmers are individuals whose main job function is
programming.Programmers write programs according to specifications
determined mainly by computer engineers, software developers or system
analysts.

Some duties include:


● Design and write system programs
● Test and debug programs
● research software upgrades and make recommendations
3.COMPUTER SUPPORT SPECIALIST
A computer support specialist assists users who are having problems with
software, computers, or peripherals such as printers or scanners.

Some duties include:


● Provide technical assistance directly to computer users who need
assistance with specific applications.
● Assist callers with requests for information technology services, repair
or support requests, complaints, and inquiries and direct to
appropriate IT personnel via computer tracking system
4.COMPUTER SYSTEMS ANALYST
A system analyst looks at the operations of a manual or computerized system
in an organisation or company, and tries to find solutions to specific end-user
problems by implementing a new computerized system or upgrading an
existing one.

Some duties include:


● plan and conduct studies to determine if the existing system needs to be
upgraded or if a new system should be put in place
● test and debug new systems
● assist in training employees to use the system
5.NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR
Network administrators are responsible for the creation, administration and
security of computer networks.

Some duties include:

● Set up users accounts and arrangements for access


● Create security policies for the network
● Troubleshoot and solve problems on the network
6.SYSTEMS ADMINISTRATOR
A system administrator, or sysadmin, is a person who is responsible for the
upkeep, configuration, and reliable operation of computer systems; especially
multi-user computers, such as servers.

● Maintain and update the server software


● Manage and run backups and recovery
● Monitor and manage traffic of the server so that it does not get
overloaded
7.DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR
Many organisations have computer databases that store information on
employees,customers and inventory. A database administrator (DBA) is
responsible for the administration and management of a company’s database.
This involves the effective and efficient storage, retrieval, customization and
archiving of data.

Some duties include:


● Design and develop database applications
● Control access to data
● Keep the data up to date
● establish a backup and recovery procedure in case of failure or loss of data
8.SOFTWARE DEVELOPER
A software developer or engineer applies the principles of software engineering
to the design, development, maintenance, testing and evaluation of the
software that runs devices, or even controls networks.In addition, they instruct
computer programmers who write the code for software.

Some duties include:

● analyse users needs and then design, test and develop software to meet
those needs
● perform maintenance on the software to ensure it is up to date
9.WEB DEVELOPER/WEB DESIGNER
The world wide web (www) is growing at a tremendous rate, and so too are
the business activities that are transacted over it.To conduct business over
the web, a company must advertise, which requires the building and
maintenance of a website. A web developer creates web pages containing
information such as text and graphics.

Some duties include:


● Develop a visually stimulating website
● Find and install tools to create web content
● Maintain and improve existing web content
10.SOCIAL MEDIA SPECIALIST
A Social Media Specialist is responsible for creating and administering
content on all social media platforms, such as Facebook, Instagram, and
Twitter, to build an audience and ensure customer engagement.

Some duties include:


● Build and execute social media strategy through research,
benchmarking, messaging, and audience identification.
● Write, develop, and strategize online content production and scheduling.
● Assist with crisis management, bad reviews, and negative news
communications.
