Measures of Position

(Week 6-7, Quarter 4)

At the end of the week, the learners should be able to:

1. Formulates Statistical Mini-Research

Objectives
At the end of the week, the learners should be able to:

1. Define research, importance of research, and the skills

which will be developed upon researching.
2. Explain the steps in formulating and conducting a
statistical mini-research.
3. Enumerate the format of a statistical mini-research.
Definition of Research
Research - is the systematic investigation into and study of materials and
sources to
establish facts and non-conclusions. Basically, research is being made
to
look for new innovations, solutions and recommendations for a pre-
existing phenomenon or problem. It is systematic as it follows an in-
depth procedure to come up with a desirable outcome. It is a process
Researcher
which requires awhose

to seek for answers to his
questions.
Importance of
 It’s a tool forResearch
building knowledge and facilitating learning.
 It’s a means to understand issues and increase public awareness.
 It helps us succeed in business.
 It allows us to disprove lies and support truths.
 It is a means to find, gauge and seize opportunities.
 It promotes a love and confidence in reading, writing, analyzing, and sharing
valuable information.
 It provides nourishment and exercise for the mind.
Skills developed in Research
 It develops analytical, critical and creative thinking skills.

 It develops individual and collaborative skills.

 It promotes active participation.

 It develops communication, listening, and writing skills.

Steps in Formulating a
Statistical Mini-Research
Step 1: Collecting Data
- this refers to the methods of gathering information needed for research.
Step 2: Organizing Data
- this means that data should be categorized and classified to make them more useful.
Step 3: Presenting Data
- this means that the organized data should be presented using tabular (table) and
graphical representations (graphs and charts).
Step 4: Analyzing Data
- this is the process of extracting from the given data relevant information from which
numerical description can be formed.
Step 5: Interpreting Data
- when the data were carefully and systematically analyzed, conclusions will be drawn.
Procedures in Conducting a
Statistical Mini-Research
1 . Mini research may be done individually or collaboratively. Think of a research topic
that is timely and relevant. Note that the mini-research is quantifiable.
2 . Prepare the materials that are to be used in research such as survey questionnaires
and interview guide questions.

3 . Determine the number of respondents through random sampling or systematic

random sampling. Use Slovin’s Formula to identify the sample size. A confidence
level of 95% gives a margin of error; a confidence level of 99% gives a margin or error.
Formula: where, n = is the sample size
N = is the total population
e = is the margin of error
Procedures in Conducting a
Statistical Mini-Research
4. Distribute the materials to your target participants in order to gather data.
5. Ask for your teacher’s assistance to prevent problems in computation and
interpretation of the gathered information.
6. If you have already drawn conclusions and generalizations from the data you
collected, you may start writing the main parts of the paper and finalize the
conclusions.
7. Before finalizing your paper, make sure to re-read and proof-read your work. You can
ask your English teacher to check the language content of your paper.
8. Prepare the written report of the results of the study.
9. Present your research output to your mathematics teacher. Discuss on how measures of
position have been applied in the methods of arriving to conclusions and recommendations.
Parts of Statistical
Mini-Research
I. Title Page VI. Evaluation
II. Background of the Study VII. Conclusion and Recommendation
III. Statement of the Problem VIII. Bibliography/Appendices
IV. Significance of the Study
V. Research Methodology
A. Research Design
B. Respondent
C. Data Gathering
D. Statistical Treatments
Example of
Mini-Research
I. Title Page
Ex: The Performance in Mathematics of Grade 9 – Abueva students of Napindan
Integrated
School for the First Quarter SY 2019 - 2020
II. Background of the Study
- It is the first part of the Statistical Mini Research where researcher must tell something
about the topic.
Ex: Math is the most hated subject among students. Many get low grades in Mathematics that
is why they do not like it. They think that it is very difficult. Mathematics teachers need to
know about this and must conduct interventions that will help them to overcome it.
Example of
Mini-Research
III. Statement of the Problem
- It Includes the purpose and reason why researchers conduct the study. It answers the
question, “What made you conduct the study?”
Ex: This mini research will help the researcher identify the performance in Mathematics of

Grade 9 – Abueva students of Napindan Integrated School for the First Quarter of
SY 2019 - 2020.
IV. Significance of the Study
- This part tells the importance of the study.
Ex: By doing this research, the researcher will be able to know if the students have difficulty
in
the subject.
Example of
Mini-Research
V. Research Methodology
A. Research Methodology
- It refers to the strategy that you choose to use to integrate the different components
of the study in a logical way. It constitutes the blueprint for the collection measurements and
analysis of the data.
- Documentary analysis can be used in conducting the mini – research. The data is
already available, and it comes from official documents or personal documents as a source of
information.
Ex: Class Record, Google Forms
Note: Parts of your mini research may vary depending on the availability of data.
Example of
Mini-Research
B. Respondent
- Respondents are persons that taken part in the study
Ex: All the students of Grade 9 – Abueva of Napindan Integrated School SY 2019-2020:

C. Data Gathering
- In this part, the researcher will write how the data were gathered. If the respondents
answered survey questions or if they answered the test paper or you used poll in questions in
messenger app
Ex: The data that was used in this study was obtained from teacher’s class record.
Example of
Mini-Research
D. Statistical Treatments
- It refers to statistics being used like measure of central tendency, measures of
variability, measures of position and others. You must show the table and solution. Graphs
are also used to visualize the outcome of the research.
Ex: Mean, Median, Quartiles, Deciles, Percentile, Percentile Rank and etc.,

VI. Evaluation
- State the findings related to your objectives.
Ex: The class has an average of 80.23 % or 80%.
Example of
Mini-Research
VII. Conclusion and Recommendation
- Summarize the key findings, outcomes or information in your research and make
recommendation.
Ex: Based on the results, it was affirmed that Grade 9- Abueva got the higher percent of
mastery level during the 2nd semester because there are only small percent of the students
got failing grade and most of the students got passing grade.

The teacher will conduct remedial classes on the 14% students who failed the subject.
VIII. Bibliography /Appendices
- List down the reference books you used that help you finish the mini research.
Indicate also if you use materials that come from the internet.
Learning Task!
Ask your math teacher about the final grades of G10 - Faith for 1 st quarter
period. Gather all the data from your teacher by listing then construct a frequency
distribution of a grouped data. (Use i = 3)
A. Calculate the following:
1. 1st quartile
2. 5th decile
3. 70th percentile
