journals.

5. The mood of the poem is the author’s reaction to his/her
experiences in life.

What is poetry?
 It is a type of literature based on the interplay of words and rhythm.

 In poetry, words are put together to form sounds, images, and ideas
that might be too complex or abstract to describe directly.

 The purpose of poetry is to help us understand the world around us. It


endeavors to show us things anew that we may have previously taken
for granted. It offers us new perspectives on the familiar. In doing
this, it helps us understand our world in a deeper sense

Types of Poetry
Lyric poetry
• It concerns with the emotional life of the poet written in
his personal perspective or reflection. It expresses
strong thoughts and emotions.

Examples: The Road Not Taken, Invictus


Narrative
poetry
It has elements of storytelling such as
characters, setting and plot.

Examples: Beowulf,
The Canterbury Tales
Descriptive poetry
• It employs rich imagery to describe the world
around the poet. It focuses more on the external
world rather than the interior life of the poet.

Elements of Poetry
Speaker/Persona
The poem’s speaker/persona is the person
who is addressing the reader/listener. It
can either be the point of view of the poet
or a character in the poem.

Addressee
The addressee is the receiver of the message of
the poem. These are usually the readers or
listeners of the text.
Speaker/Persona
The poet in the character of Jacques from
the Shakespearean play “As You Like It”

Addressee
Readers or listeners from all ages that would
relate to the descriptions the poet gave.
Content
Content is the subject of the poem. It
answers the question “what?” What is
the poem all about? What happens in the
poem?

Theme
The theme of the poem is the meaning or the
main idea that the poet is trying to
communicate. The theme may be stated
directly or it may be implied.
Content
The poem is all about the different
stages of life a man experiences
from birth to death.

Theme
Life is like drama, each man and
woman has their own roles to play in
the various stages in life.
Form
In poetry, you will encounter two forms: structured and free verse.

Structured Free Verse

• Predictable patterns of rhyme, • No predictable pattern of lines


rhythm, line-length, and or stanza.

Form

Stanzas: These are a series of lines grouped together and


separated by an empty line from other stanzas. They are the
equivalent of a paragraph in an essay. One way to identify a
stanza is to count the number of lines.
couplet (2 lines) cinquain (5 lines) octave (8 lines)
tercet (3 lines) sestet (6 lines)
quatrain (4 lines) septet (7 lines)
Mood
The mood of a poem is the feeling that the poet creates and that the
reader sense through the poet’s choice of words, rhythm, rhyme,
style and structure. Poems may express many moods – humorous,
sarcastic, joyous, angry or solemn.
Literary Device
The poem uses metaphor where it
compares life to a stage play.

Read the following poem and identify
the basic elements of poetry.
 What is the poem all about?
Ans.: The poem seeks to remind readers of the power of hope
and how little it requires of people. The speaker makes it clear
that hope has been helpful in times of difficulty and has never
asked for anything in return.
 To which object does the speaker compare Hope to? Pick
out one imagery that supports your answer.

Ans: Hope is being compared to a bird as seen in the line “ is


the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul”

 What is the theme (message) of the poem?


Ans.: Hope is miraculous and almost impossible to defeat. It
urges the readers to see it as essential, deeply part of
themselves.
