CHAPTER 2 (exercise example)
• Exercise : At 6.000ft the air temperature is 190 C. Calculate the air temperature at 8.000ft,
4.000ft, 3.000ft and at the surface, using the ISA temperature lapse rate.

CHAPTER 2 (exercise example)
• Exercise : At 6.000ft the air temperature is 190 C. Calculate the air temperature at 8.000ft,
4.000ft, 3.000ft and at the surface, using the ISA temperature lapse rate.

The ISA temperature lapse rate is : 20 C / 1,000ft

When moving higher, temperature decreases by 20 C / 1,000ft and when moving lower, temperature
increases by 20 C / 1,000ft.

Therefor the temperature at :

- 8,000ft will be : 150 C (190 C - 40 C = 150 C )

- 4,000ft will be : 230 C (190 C + 40 C = 230 C )
- 3,000ft will be : 250 C (190 C + 60 C = 250 C )
- Surface will be : 310 C (190 C + 120 C = 310 C )
EXERCISE - CHAPTER 4
• The elevation of an airfield is 825ft from the mean sea level (MSL).
What is the indication (reading) on the altimeter of an aircraft when it
is on the runway or when flying 1,655ft above ground, with QFE
settings and with QNH settings.

will be 1,655
ft ft = 2,480 ft
with QNH settings the reading of the altimeter will be : 1,655 + 825 ft = 2,480 ft

QFE : Height above the ground --------- QNH : Altitude above the mean sea level
EXERCISE - CHAPTER 4
• The pressure at an airfield with elevation 600ft from the mean sea
level (MSL), is 980hPa. What is the corrected pressure at the mean
sea level ? (Use the ISA pressure lapse rate)

The equation (the formula) of the relation between pressure at the

station Pst and the corrected pressure at the MSL PMSL is :

PMSL = PST + [(1 hPa/30 feet) x height above sea level]

Which means : QNH = QFE + [(1 hPa/30ft) x elevation] =>

QNH = 980hPa + [(1hPa/30ft) x 600ft] =>
QNH = 980hPa + 20hPa = 1,000hPa
QNH = 1,000hPa
