• a subgroup size of one (new cases)(variable chart)

• Used to determine if a process is stable and predictable, it creates a

picture of how the system changes over time.
• The individual (X) chart displays individual measurements (new cases
over time). The moving range (MR) chart shows variability between
one data point and the next.
• Individuals and moving range charts are also used to monitor the
effects of process improvement theories.
• XmR charts are used more often because they (1) do not assume a
rational subgroup, (2) they are easier to create, and (3) they require
less data than an XbarR chart.
How to choose n?
• Put an abnormal point
• Trial and error
• See XMR and check which one is more accurate and sensitive?
Rules (tests for special causes)
• Rule 2Rule 1: one point is more than 3 standard deviations (SD) from the mean
• : 8 or more points in a row are on the same side of the mean
• Rule 3: 6 or more points in a row are continually increasing or decreasing
• Rule 4: 8 or more points in a row alternate in direction
• Rule 5: 2 or 3 out of the 3 points in a row are more than 2 SD from the mean in same direction

Why applying rules?

To prevent phase 1 and phase 2 errors
Type 1 error of the control chart: conclude the process is out of control when it is really in control
Type 2 error of the control chart: conclude the process is in control when it is really out of control
