Electrical Circuits
Today, we are going to be building electrical circuits.

With a partner, discuss what you think an electrical circuit is and what makes up an electrical
circuit?

Is the word ‘circuit’ used in contexts outside of science? What does it mean then? Do they
have similar meanings?
Electrical Circuits
Let’s look at the definition of ‘circuit’ on your Knowledge Organiser:

What do you think we might use as our power supply for making circuits today?

Circuit Challenge
You have 15 minutes in your group to try and build a working circuit using the equipment that
you have been given.

Think about:

? What do the different parts do?

? How do I know if the circuit is working?

? What are the key things that I need to do to get a circuit working?

Circuits are made up of different components (parts).

? How do I know if the circuit is working?

When your circuit contains a bulb, motor or buzzer,

the circuit is working if the bulb lights up, the motor
moves or the buzzer sounds.

? What are the key things that I need to do to get a circuit working?

Building Circuits
The circuits you’ve built are called ‘series circuits’. Let’s look at the definition on your
Knowledge Organiser.
Building Circuits

If your components are connected in a loop, the electricity

will flow in one direction around the circuit.

When electricity keeps flowing all the way round this single
pathway, what happens to:

? the bulb?

? the buzzer?

? the motor?
Building Circuits

Now that you know how to build a series

circuit, use the Building Circuits Activity
Sheet to try building the circuits from the
components given.

Draw a labelled diagram of each circuit.

You can also investigate what happens to the

brightness of the bulb when you add more cells.
