Eiffel Tower, Paris

• When the tower opened in the 19th century, it was


the world's tallest building at 1,024 feet (312.11
meters).
• The Eiffel Tower has 1,665 stairs and three viewing
platforms.
• Nearly 50 miles of electric cables cover the
structure.

• There are 120 antennas atop the Eiffel Tower.


• The tower is made of 18,000 iron pieces bolted
together by over 2.5 million rivets.
• 20,000 light bulbs illuminate the landmark every
night.
Taj Mahal, India

• The Taj Mahal took 22 years to build.


• More than 22,000 labourers worked in the construction of the
Taj Mahal.
• The construction of the Taj Mahal cost 3.2 crores of rupees at
that time.
• Various Precious stones were brought from various countries
for the building of the Taj Mahal.
• The white marble stone was brought from Rajasthan. Blue
gems from Tibet, emeralds from Sri Lanka, jasper from Punjab,
and crystals were imported from China.
• The Taj Mahal is a mixture of Persian, Ottoman, Indian, and
Islamic architectural style.
• The Taj Mahal construction started in 1632 AD and was
completed in 1653AD.

Sydney Opera House,

• Sydney Opera House sits on Bennelong Point. Bennelong Point was


named after Woollarawarre Bennelong, a senior Eora man at the time of
the arrival of British colonisers in Australia in 1788.

• The original cost estimate to build Sydney Opera House was $7 million.
The final cost was $102 million and it was largely paid for by a State
Lottery.

• 233 designs were submitted for the Opera House international design
competition held in 1956. Jørn Utzon from Denmark was announced the
winner, receiving ₤5000 for his design.

• Construction was expected to take four years. It took 14 years. Work


commenced in 1959 and involved 10,000 construction workers.

• Paul Robeson was the first person to perform at Sydney Opera House. In
1960, he climbed the scaffolding and sang Ol' Man River to the
construction workers as they ate lunch.
