 It estimates disease burden.
 Used to describe the distribution (PPT).
Commonly used for chronic diseases but misleading for
acute episodes of chronic illnesses..
Prevalence is affected by:

1. New and effective treatment


2. Increased survival
3. Population movement
Example
Suppose we followed a population of 900 persons
for one year, and 10 had a disease of interest at the
start of follow‐up and another 25 new cases
developed during the year.
1) What is the period prevalence for the year?
2) What is the point prevalence at the start of the
period?
3) What is the cumulative incidence for the one
year period?

In 2000 EC, Hawassa University enrolled about 4220 students in
the freshman program. During entry to the university in Sept
2000, voluntary testing for HIV was made and 100 were positive
for HIV. A year later, in Sept 2001 re-test was made on the
remaining students and 50 become positive. In Sept 2002, during
re-testing, another 50 converted positive, and finally in Sept
2003, 20 additional students converted positive. (Note: HIV is not a
cure disease; no one has died, or has been dismissed or taken withdrawal)
