WHAT IS
HALOGRAM?

• A three dimensional image formed by

the interference of light beams from a
laser or other coherent light source.
• The image changes with respect to the
position and orientation of the viewing
system .
• Divisibility property.
Father of
holography
•Dennis Gabor CBE FRS was a Hungarian-
British electrical engineer and physicist,
most notable for inventing holography, for
which he later received the 1971 Nobel
Prize in Physics.
HOLOGRAPHIC
MEMORY
• Holographic memory is a technique
that can store information at high
density inside crystals.
• Holographic memory is developing
technology that has promised to
revolutionalise the storage systems.
• It can store data up to 1Tb-4Tb in a
sugar cube sized crystal.
•There are two techniques in
HALLOGRAPHI holography. They are,
C
TECHNIQUES • TWO –AXIS HALOGRAPHY
• COLLINERA HALLOGRAPHY
HOLOGRAPHIC
VERSATILE DISC
• HVD (Holographic Versatile Disc) is the
next generation in optical disk
technology.
• HVD is still in a research phase that
would phenomenally increase the disk
storage capacities over the currently
existing HD DVD and Blu-ray optical
disk systems.

• VD uses a technology called 'collinear

holography,' in which two laser rays,
one blue-green and one red, are
collimated into a single beam

Physics of
holography
•The process of producing a holographic
reconstruction is explained below purely in
terms of interference and diffraction
• Holographic data storage is a technique
that can store information at high density
inside crystals or photopolymers.
• The ability to store large amounts of
information in some kind of medium is
of great importance, as many electronic

Data storage •
products incorporate storage devices.
As current storage techniques such as
Blu-ray Disc reach the limit of possible
data density (due to the diffraction-
limited size of the writing beams),
holographic storage has the potential to
become the next generation of popular
storage media
Sensors or
biosensors
•The hologram is made with a modified
material that interacts with certain
molecules generating a change in the fringe
periodicity or refractive index, therefore,
the color of the holographic reflection
Advantages of
holography

•➨It delivers enhanced feasibility of objects

including depth.
•➨They are complex patterns and hence offers
security in wide applications as mentioned
above. ➨It offers creation of multiple images
on single plate including 3D images.
•➨Holographic technologies can be easily
combined with other technologies.
Disadvantages
of holography
➨It has higher production cost compare
to 2D projection.
➨It is not easily seen in the presence of
fluorescent lighting.
➨Use of applying the concept of
holographic projection in the design of
products are costly.
➨It is time consuming to construct images
using 3D holograms.
