The beginning of World War I, also
World
known as the "Great War" from 1914 to
War I 1918, was set off by the assassination of

During December 1914, soldiers from

agreed to temporarily stop fighting and
1914 celebrate Christmas together in what
became known as the Christmas Truce.
This brief period of unity and
compassion saw troops exchanging gifts
and playing soccer matches in the area
between their trenches. When German
soldiers lit lanterns along their trenches,
carol singing started. Before long, the
British and French soldiers united in.
The Somme River was near the
Western Front during World War I,
Battle of the Somme where the Battle of the Somme occurred
1916 from July to November 1916, starting as
an Allied attack on German forces. The
conflict became one of the most fierce,
lethal, and expensive battles in all of
mankind's past, with British troops
enduring over 57,000 casualties,
including over 19,000 soldiers killed, on
just the initial day of the battle.
The peace terms between
Germany and the victorious Allies
Treaty of Versailles were officially documented in the
1919 Treaty of Versailles, which was signed
in 1919 at the Palace of Versailles in
Paris after World War I. The Treaty of
Versailles blamed Germany for
initiating the war and enforced severe
punishments on the Germans, such as
giving up land, making huge
reparations payments, and disarming
their military.
On September 1, 1939, German
World War II troops led by Adolf Hitler attack
Invasion of Poland Poland both on the ground and through
1939 aerial bombings. The beginning of
World War II was marked by
Germany's invasion of Poland in an
attempt to regain lost territory and
establish control over their eastern
neighbor. The German invasion of
Poland provided insight into Hitler's
intended war strategy, known as the
"blitzkrieg."
Pearl Harbor, located near
Attack on Pearl Honolulu in Hawaii,is a U.S. naval
Harbor 1941 base where Japanese forces launched a
devastating surprise attack on
December 7, 1941.Shortly before 8
a.m. on the Sunday morning, a large
number of Japanese fighter planes
attacked the base, successfully causing
destruction or damage to almost 20
American naval vessels, such as eight
battleships,and more than 300
airplanes.
The Battle of Stalingrad was a
fierce military conflict between Russian
troops and those of Nazi Germany and
Battle of Stalingrad
the Axis powers in World War II.The
1942 conflict is well-known for being one of
the biggest, lengthiest,and most brutal
battles in recent military history:
Between August 1942 and February
1943,over two million soldiers engaged
in combat,resulting in almost two
million casualties,which included tens
of thousands of Russian civilians.
D-Day was the title assigned to the
D-Day (Normandy military operation that took place on
June 6, 1944, when soldiers from the
Invasion
United States, Canada,the United
1944 Kingdom, and other nations invaded the
shores of Normandy in northern France
as part of World War II.By the end of
the day,around 156,000 Allied soldiers
were on the Normandy beaches.Despite
their achievements, approximately
4,000 Allied troops lost their lives to
German soldiers protecting the beaches.
Following World War II,the Allies
Cold War divided Germany after its defeat into
Berlin Airlift zones occupied by the Soviets,
1948 Americans, British, and French.
Berlin,the capital of Germany, was
situated within the Soviet zone and was
also fragmented into four parts.In June
1948,the Russians blocked all routes
from western-occupied Germany to
western-occupied Berlin because they
desired to have control of the entire
city.
The conflict known as the Korean
Korean War war was initiated on June 25,1950,
1950 with about 75,000 troops from the
North Korean People's Army crossing
the 38th parallel,separating the Soviet-
supported Democratic People's
Republic of Korea in the north and the
Republic of Korea allied with the West
in the south.This was the initial
military response during the Cold
War.American soldiers joined the war
to support South Korea in July.
The capitalist United States and the
communist Soviet Union were in
opposition with each other.Beginning in
Space Race the late 1950s, space became a fierce
1950 battleground for this competition, as both
sides sought to showcase the superiority
of their technology, military power,and
ultimately,their political and economic
systems.In the Cold War era, notable
accomplishments in space exploration
were achieved, such as sending the first
person into space and landing on the
moon.
In October 1962,the leaders of
Cuban Missile Crisis the U.S. and the Soviet Union were
1962 involved in a tense 13-day political
and military standoff known as the
Cuban Missile Crisis.It revolved
around the placement of Soviet
nuclear missiles in Cuba,only 90 miles
away from the U.S. coast.During a TV
speech on October 22, 1962,President
John F.Kennedy (1917-63) informed
the American public about the
missiles.
