1. WHAT IS SOLDERING ?

• Soldering is a joining process, which results in joining of materials by

molten solder.
• Molten solder is distributed between the closely fitted surfaces .
• In soldering there are 3 key elements : -Heat , solder and flux
2.INSTRUMENTS USED FOR SOLDERING

2.1.1 Solder : it is a type of filler material

2.1.2 Electric soldering iron : It provides heat to the base metal & melt
solder

2.1.3 Iron stand, Sponge & Exhaust fan : Iron stand is used to keep iron
hot. Sponge is used to clean the iron tip.Exhaust fan is used to exhaust the
fumes .
2.1.4 Soldering iron temperature controller : Soldering iron is
connected through temperature controller.

2.1.5 Thermometer : It is a device used to measure temperature of

soldering iron.
3. FLUX & ITS FUNCTION
FLUX :
Flux is a natural material known as rosin/resin which helps in cleaning of
the metal surface. It functions at high temperature but at normal
temperature it doesn’t function.
Working Temperature of Rosin Flux is +80 to +300 degree C.

FUNCTION OF FLUX:
• Removes oxides & other impurities
• Prevent oxidation
• Promotes flowing of solder.
4. TYPES OF SOLDER
4.1 LEAD FREE
COMPOSITION : TIN (SN) – 96.5%
SILVER (AG)- 3 %
COPPER (CU)-0.5%

4.2 LEADED
COMPOSITION : TIN (SN ) -62.7 %
LEAD (PB)-37.3 %
5. SOLDERING METHOD
6. SAFETY IN SOLDERING WORK

6.1 Clothing
1.It is mandatory for the operator to wear safety glasses , gloves and safety shoes
2.Do not touch the solder with bare hands .

6.2 Cleanliness
1.The team member should wash his hands thoroughly after soldering operation.

2.Smoking , eating and drinking are strictly forbidden within the operating area.

6.3 Environment
1.Local ventilators should be running during the soldering operation .

2.Check whether the air exhausts are working properly or not

7. JUDGING POINTS FOR GOOD SOLDERING
1. The solder surface should be glossy and smooth .

2. It should br free from ruggedness, flux burning or brittleness.

3. It should have a gentle sloping shape.

4. No soldering defects should be allowed.

5. Solder should cover the leaded wire thinly so that the lead wire is barely

distinguished .

6. Foreign objects such as chips of wire , and other dirt must not be found in

the joint .
