INSTRUMENTATION &

IMPROVISATION IN
SCIENCE TEACHING
AND LEARNING
Mrs. Jhenie R. Agustin
What we will learn together
• Define instrumentation and improvisation.
• Discuss forms of improvisation.
• Identify principles of improvisation.
• Connect improvisation and design thinking
• Recognize one’s improvisation mindset
According to merriam-webster.com,
instrumentation is the application of instruments in
the form of devices, to accomplish some specific
objectives in terms of measurement or control, or
both.
Improvisation is reworking precomposed material
and designs in relation to unanticipated ideas
conceived, shaped, and transformed under the
special conditions of performance, thereby adding
unique features to every creation.

Berliner, 1994 in Weick, 1998

In science lessons, improvisation is making
instructional materials by teachers and learners
using locally accessible resources (Ndirangu et
al., 2003) .
