CHEMISTRY
ATOMS, ISOTOPES, AR AND MR
• Describe the difference between an atom, element, compound and
mixture

• Use the periodic table to calculate numbers of protons, neutrons and

electrons in an atom

• Recall what is meant by the term isotope

Atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures
• Each element is listed on the periodic table and has a
chemical symbol
• Chemical formula can be used to represent elements and
compounds
• The chemical formula for a substance shows how many
atoms of each element are present in substance

Calculating protons, neutrons and electrons

On the periodic table there are some numbers next to

every element.

These are important as they allow us to calculate the

number of protons, neutrons and electrons in an atom
Calculating protons, neutrons and electrons
Mass Number –
Number of protons
and neutrons.
To calculate number of
Protons: Take the
small number (8)

To calculate number of
Atomic (proton) Electrons: Take the
number – Number small number. (8)
of protons
To calculate number of
The number of neutrons take the
electrons is the large number and
same as the number subtract the small
of protons number. (16-8=8)
Calculating protons, neutrons and electrons
Calculate the number of protons, neutrons and electrons found
in each atom of these four elements.

Mass Number
= number of protons plus neutrons

Atomic Number
= number of protons
What is an isotope?
• The same element with the same number of protons but a
different number of neutrons

• This means that the atoms will have different masses.

Relative formula Mass
Relative Atomic Mass
The relative atomic mass of an element (Ar) compares the
mass of atoms of the element with 12C isotope.

It is an average value for the isotopes of the element

Relative formula Mass

The relative formula mass (Mr) of a compound is the sum
of the relative atomic masses of the atoms.

To calculate the Mr you need to add all of the Ar results

together.

What is an isotope?

The table shows the mass numbers and abundances of

naturally-occurring isotopes of the same element.

Calculate the relative atomic mass and identify the element.

Relative atomic mass =

(mass of one isotope x abundance of isotope) + (mass of one
isotope x abundance of isotope) / total abundance of atoms
What is an isotope?
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of
neutrons are called isotopes.
The table shows the mass numbers and abundances of
naturally-occurring isotopes of the same element.

Calculate the relative atomic mass and identify the

element.
Ar = ((63 x 69) + (65 x 31)) / 100 = 63.6
Relative formula mass (Mr)

The relative formula mass (Mr) of a compound is the sum of

the relative atomic masses of the atoms.

To calculate the Mr you need to add all of the Ar results together.

On the next few slides are some worked examples:

Relative formula mass (Mr)

O= Oxygen
Na = Sodium Ar = 16
Ar = 23
NaOH H= Hydrogen
Ar = 1
23 + 16 + 1 = 40

Mr = 40
Relative formula mass (Mr)

N= Nitrogen
K= Potassium Ar = 14
Ar = 39
KNO3 O= Oxygen
Ar = 16
=39 + 14 + (16x3)
= 39 + 14 + 48 But O3 = 3 x 16
= 101 =48

Mr = 101
Relative formula mass (Mr)

O= Oxygen
Ar = 16
Ca= Calcium
Ar = 40
Ca(OH)2 H= Hydrogen
Ar = 1
=40 + (16x2) + (1x2)
= 40 + 32 + 2
= 74

Mr = 74
