Introduction
The small intestine is an approximately 6m long organ of the digestive tract and is
responsible for the absorption of nutrients.
It is divided into three sections: duodenum, jejunum and ileum.
Duodenum has wider lumen and thicker wall with numerous broad villi.
There are 4 layers in duodenum
1. Mucosa
2. Submucosa
3. Muscularis externa
4. Serosa
Identification
point
Mucosal villi, lined by
columnar epithelium with
microvilli and globlet cells.
Submucosal Brunners’s gland
present.
Features
Mucosa
Lined by simple columnar cells with microvilli and goblet cells
Has circular folds called villi for increasing surface area
Each villus has a core lamina propria with a central lacteal and
blood vessel
Crypts of Lieberkuhn are seen
Mucus secreting goblet cells and paneth cells secreting
lysozyme are also seen
Submucosa
Contains duodenal glands called brunner’s gland which
neutralizes the acidic content
The ducts of these glands open into lumen of duodenum
Muscularis Externa
Outer longitudinal and inner circular
Serosa
Peritonial covering made up of flat squamous cells
