Thermal processes
Learning Objectives: Starter
• Understand and identify
examples and uses of
conduction, convection and
radiation Think about the pans and pots in your
house.
What materials are they made of? Why do
you think that is?
How is heat transferred?
Where and how is heat transfer taking place at this seaside?
Why does heat transfer happen?
Heat is a type of energy called thermal energy.
1. conduction
2. convection
3. radiation
During heat transfer, thermal energy always moves in the same direction:
HOT COLD
Heat energy only flows when there is a temperature difference from a warmer
area to a cooler area.
Conduction
Conduction transfer of heat through a
material by transferring kinetic energy
from one particle to another.
Which of these are less dense? Which of these are less dense?
A B A B
What happens when particles are heated?
When particles are heated, they spread out, meaning that they are
less dense than the others around them, this will cause them to
rise.
Challenge:
Can you apply this knowledge to state how a hot air balloon works?
What happens a fluid is heated?
Liquids and gases can both flow and behave in similar ways, so they are called fluids.
less dense
heat fluid
The heated fluid particles gain energy, so they move about more and spread out. The
same number of particles now
take up more space, so the fluid has become less dense
Convection
Method in which thermal
energy is transferred in fluids
(liquids and gases)
that doesn’t require a How does this heat energy travel from the Sun to the Earth?

There are no particles between the The heat travels to Earth by infrared

space.
Emitting thermal radiation
All objects emit (give out) some thermal radiation.
Which type of kettle would cool down faster: a black kettle or a shiny metallic kettle?

blanket after a race?
