INTRODUCTION TO TECHNICAL
REPORT
Is a document that presents technical information and research findings in a clear and concise
manner.
Reports communicate the results of the research and activities
They may also be archived to provide a record of an organization’s achievements
They are written to a specific audience such as engineers, scientist, or other professionals
They are used to communicate complex information about a project or study.
APPLICATIONS OF TECHNICAL
REPORT
Technical report can be applied in different aspects as listed down;
Research and development
Engineering and construction
Environmental assessment
Safety and health
Regulatory compliance
USES OF TECHNICAL REPORTS
Providing detailed documentation of scientific and engineering experiments,
methods and results.
Providing recommendation for technical improvements or solution to problem.
Documenting the progress of project or program.
Serving as a record of work done for future references and a basis for further research.
Providing technical analysis of a product, process or system.
GENERAL FORMAT OF WRITING
TECHNICAL REPORTS
1.Title page
-This part contains information such as title of the report, name of the author, and date.
2.Executive summary
-This is the brief summary of the reports points, including topic
3.Table of content
-This is the list of the major sections and subsections of the report
4.Introduction
-It sets the context for the report and provides background information on the topic

GENERAL GUIDELINES OF WRITING
TECHNICAL REPORT
Plan well before you write your report
Follow a logical and organized structure with headings and sub headings
Use clear and concise language.
Make text visually appealing.
Use visuals such as tables, charts, and graphs to support the findings.
Review and revise the report for accuracy, coherence and clarity
Edit your report carefully
TYPES OF TECHNICAL REPORTS
Types of technical report falls in to two categories which are;
Long and short reports
Formal and informal reports
1.SHORT REPORT
This is the type of report that provides a brief overview of a particular topic
Provide brief and concise information Provide detailed and in-depth information
Generally require less research and analysis Generally require more research and analysis
May not require appendices and references Include appendices and references
3.FORMAL REPORT
Is a report document that follows a prescribed format and structure.
It is used to communicate the results to specific audience such as a board
of directors or senior management.
Formal reports covers complex projects and is directed to readers at
different technical levels.

TYPES OF FORMAL REPORTS

4.INFORMAL REPORT
Is a document that does not follow a prescribed format or structure.
It contains about two to five pages text, not including attachments.
It is mostly used to communicate information within an organization or external
stakeholders in a more casual manner.
It includes memos, emails or other types of correspondence that do not require
a formal structure or tone.
FORMAT OF WRITING INFORMAL
REPORT
ABC FORMAT: organization
ABSRACT: start with a capsule version of the information most needed
by decision makers.
BODY: give the details in the body of the report, where technical readers
are most likely to linger a while to examine supporting evidence.
CONCLUSION: reverse the end of the report for a description or list findings,
conclusions, or recommendations.
