SIR MARK ROBERT DE JESUS Introduction to ICT
What is information and
Communications Technology?
Information and communications technology (ICT) is a
field of technology that deals with the control of
communications processes including
telecommunications, broadcast media, intelligent
building management systems, audiovisual processing
and transmission systems, and network-based control
and monitoring tasks.
What is information and
Communications Technology?
Although there is no single, universal definition
of ICT, the term is generally accepted to mean all
devices, networking components, applications and
systems that combined allow people and
organizations (i.e., businesses, nonprofit
agencies, governments and criminal enterprises) to
interact in the digital world.
What is information and
Communications Technology?
The list of ICT components is exhaustive,
and it continues to grow. Some
components, such as computers and
telephones, have existed for decades.
Others, such as smartphones, digital TVs
and robots, are more recent entries.

Brief History of
Computers and its
development
Brief History of Computer and its Development

• The history of Computer

started from a simple device
called Abacus.
Brief History of Computer and its Development

• It is the first computing

device developed by the
Chinese.
• The abacus is made up of
beads or pebbles arranged in
rows that represent values to
facilitate calculations
Information and Communications Technology

Napier Bones
• In 1617, inventors created a
better calculating device, John
Napier of Scotland invented a
calculating device called Napier
Bones.
• It can perform multiplication
and division.
• It contains a set of 11 sticks,
which were bones, and used by
placing them side by side

Pascal Calculator
• In 1642, Blaise Pascal, A
French scientist, invented
an adding machine called
Pascal’s calculator.
• Instead of moving the beads
manually, it worked
mechanically and can add
and subtract by means of
rotating ten-toothed wheels
and cogs
Information and Communications Technology

Leibniz Calculator
in 1671, Gottfried
Leibniz, a German
Mathematician, Modified the
Pascal Calculator and
developed a machine that
could perform various
calculations based on
multiplication and Division

Analytical Engine
• Charles Babbage, a
Scientist from England
invented the Analytical
Engine.
• A machine that can store
numbers and perform
arithmetic computations
and logical operations.

Computer
Generation
First Generation Computer

• First Generation
Computer In 1946, ENIAC
or Electronic Numerical
Integrator and
Calculator is the
world’s first successful
electronic computer
• ENIAC was developed and it was
a starting point of the
current generation of Computer
First Generation Computer

• It was the first general-purpose and

programmable electronic computer.
• It utilized 18,000 vacuum tubes that
worked simultaneously.
• The size of this machine requires a
huge rooms.
• The storage capacity is quite small and
could only process one program at a
time
First Generation Computer

• ENIAC
Second Generation Computer

Transistors were invented as

a electronic components
instead of Vacuum Tubes.
Because a transistor is much
smaller than a vacuum tube,
This paved the way for
second generation computers
to become smaller compared
with the first generation of
computers.
Third Generation Computer

The use of Integrated

circuits or IC in its
components is the defining
characteristics of third
generation computer.
The main advantage of IC is
not only its small size but
also its superior
performance and reliability
compared to previous
circuits.
Third Generation Computer

This Generation of computers

has far greater storage
capacity and higher calculating
speed than its predecessors.

However, technological progress

in miniaturization or the trend
of producing even smaller
devices and electronic products
led to the development of
smaller yet more powerful
generation of computer
Fourth Generation Computers

The Computers which we see

around us belongs to this
generation. A Microprocessor
is a Single chip which is
used in a computer for any
arithmetical or logical
function to be performed in
any program.
Fourth Generation Computers

Ted Hoff, an American electrical

engineer, developed the first
microprocessor, the Intel 4004
while working for intel
corporation. With the use of
microprocessor in the fourth
generation computers, computers
became very fast and efficient,
combined with eh concept of
Artificial intelligence
Fifth Generation Computer.

Artificial Intelligence is
the science and engineering
of making intelligent
machines by imitating human
characteristics and behavior.
some applications for fifth
generation computers include
robots that can interact with
human

Data and
Information
Data and Information
DATA can be defined as a representation of
facts, concepts or instructions in a
formalized manner which should be suitable
for communication, interpretation, or
processing by humans or electronic machines.

Data is represented with the help of

characters such as alphabets, digits, or
special characters and Idea.
Data and Information
Data are simply facts or figures,
When data are processed,
interpreted, organized,
structured or presented so as to
make them meaningful or useful,
they are called information.
Data Processing
Data processing is the conversion of data
into usable and desired form. This conversion
or “processing” is carried out using a
predefined sequence of operations either
manually or automatically. Most of the
processing is done by using computers and
thus done automatically. The output or
“processed” data can be obtained in various
forms.
Data Processing
Input is the task
where verified data
is coded or converted
into machine readable
form so that it can
be processed through
a computer
Data Processing
Processing is when
the data is
subjected to various
means and methods of
manipulation it can
done Manually or
automatically,
Data Processing

Output is the
stage where
processed
information is
transmitted to
the user.

ICT at school,
home, and work
ICT in School
ICT is constantly changing. It is
important to keep up with how ICT is used
at school, at home and at work

At school, computer can help you:

∙ Research a topic;
∙ Record or organize information;
∙ Write a report; and
∙ Deliver a class presentation
ICT at home

∙ Communicate with friends and

family;
∙ Find information
∙ Listen to music and watch movies; and
∙ Play games
ICT at work

∙ Create Documents;
∙ Maintain Schedules;
∙ Place orders and track sales; and
∙ Track products and workers.
Success is for ones who are busy
looking for it.
