Present Simple
• For routine and habits

Example: I play soccer every morning.

• For permanent states

Example: I live in Guayaquil


Present Simple
• The present tense is the base form of the verb:

• Example: I play tennis.

• But with the third person (she, he, it) we add s

• Example: She plays tennis.


Questions
• We use do and does to make questions in present simple.

• I, YOU, WE, THEY = DO + base form of the verb

• HE, SHE, IT = DOES + base form of the verb

• Do you play tennis?


• Does he play tennis?
Negative
• Present simple uses the auxilliary verb do/does for negative
sentences.

• do (not)/does (not) + base form of the verb

• I don’t play tennis or I do not play tennis

• He doesn’t play tennis or He does not play tennis


Time expressions
• Every day/week
• Example: John eats breakfast every morning.

• Times of the day


• Example: The train leaves at 2:20

• Days of the week.


• Example: I see you on Monday
• Mary arrives on Sunday

Where, What, When
• We use do/does with WHERE, WHAT AND WHEN

• Example:
• Where do you go?
• What does he do?
• When do they arrive?

• But with WHO we usually don’t use do/does


• Who plays tomorrow?
• Who works at the factory?
Short answer
• Do you play tennis?
• Yes, I do ==== affirmative short answer
• No, I don’t == negative short answer

• Does he play tennis?


• Yes, she does
• No, she doesn’t

• Short answer is constructed with yes or no + subject and do


(not)/does(not)

Structure
• I usually play tennis

• I don’t usually play tennis.

• Do you usually play tennis?

• Adverb of frequency + main verb

• But: I wash my clothes once a week.

Present Progressive
• We use Present continouos for actions that are happening at
the moment of speaking or for temporary situations.

• Example: I am studying English right now

• I am living in Quito for a month.

Ending of verbs in Present
Continouos
• If the verb ends with a single “e”, drop the “e” before the =
ing.

• Example: dance dancing

• Verbs with one syllable ending in one vowel + one consonant,


double the consonant before the ing

• Example: stop stopping


Ending of verbs in Present
Continouos
• Verbs with two or more syllables ending in one stressed vowel
+ one consonant, double the consonant before the ing

• Example: begin beginning

• Verbs ending in ie change to y before the ing

• Example: tie tying

Stative verbs
• Stative verbs are the ones mainly use or most use in simple
tenses and are not used in continouos tenses.

• They are also called state verbs.

• Verbs that are not stative are called dynamics

Stative verbs
• Think = believe is stative

• Have = possession is stative

• Look = seem is stative
