Lesson 5
Objectives:
 Round off numbers to the indicated
place values.
 Tell the place value of the
digit being rounded in a
number.
What is a rounding
number?
A rounded number has about the same value as the
starting number, but it is less exact.
To round off numbers:
 Locate the place of the digit to be rounded off.
 Look at the digit to the right of that place. If the digit
to the right is less than 5 (0, 1, 2, 3, 4), retain the digit
being rounded off and replace the digits to the right
with zeroes. If the digit to the right is 5 or more, add
one to the digit to be rounded off then, replace the
digits to the right with zeroes.
examples:
Round off 112 to the nearest tens.
