Fracking in The U.S
Fracking in The U.S
The term is Hydraulic Fracturing otherwise The process is by injecting liquid and
known as “fracking” is the unconventional materials at high pressure in order to create
development of oil and natural gases, a small fractures and stimulate the
geothermal energy and even water deep production and then safely extract the
underground. energy from the underground wells.
HISTORY OF FRACKING
This process has dated back to 1862 and is credited to Colonel Edward A. L.
Roberts. During the Civil War’s Battle of Fredericksburg, Roberts noted how the
impact of arterially had on the water filled channels, he then designed an
“exploding torpedo” that was lowered into an oil well which then exploded, and
then oil flow increased. This was the early process of fracking.
In the 1940s the explosives were replaced with high pressure blasts of liquids and
this then became the standard in the oil and gas industry.
More than 1.7 million U.S. wells have been completed using the fracking process,
producing more than seven billion barrels of oil and 600 trillion cubic feet of
natural gas.

PROS
There are many pros for the continuation of fracking. It helps keep us away from
coal and allows us to use natural gases which is healthy for the environment than
burning coal.
It creates many jobs for Americans this industry has created 64,000 jobs alone in
2014 and more in later years.
It is a cheaper fuel alternative; it lowers the prices of other natural materials.
ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES CONT..
CONS
While there are many pros to fracking there are also cons. It can waste a lot of
freshwater, in 2018 on average more than 5 million gallons of freshwater was
used to fracture just one well, thus wasting a very useful resource for another one.
While drilling and using the pressure of water in can lead to earthquakes, the
wastewater can lead to back up in the wells causing dangerous earthquakes.
Fracking can lead to possible pollutions to the air. The fracking of 400 wells
could increase the air pollution, and increase nitrogen dioxides rising by 1% and
4%, and volatile organic compounds by 1% and 3%.
FUTURE OF FRACKING
NOW FUTURE
The future of fracking could change drastically in
In the U.S there are 1.7 million wells that 2020 with the upcoming election under Vice President
have been completed, however currently Joe Biden there is a plan in place to go away from
there are some local bans in states of fracking to possibly banning it outright. It could lead
Vermont and Maryland, In California there to these things:
are some restrictions in local counties. • cost up to 7.5 million American jobs in 2022,
• lead to a cumulative loss of $7.1 trillion in GDP by
2030,
• reduce household incomes by $5,400 annually,
• increase household energy costs by over $600 per
year, and
• reduce farm incomes by 43 percent due to higher
energy costs
