Parallel operation of transformers

DEPT. OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

BASIC ELECTRONICS LAB
COURSE CODE: EFP005U1M

1
Introduction:

1. For supplying a load in excess of the rating of an existing transformer, two or more
transformers may be connected in parallel with the existing transformer. The transformers are
connected in parallel when load on one of the transformers is more than its capacity..
2. It is usually economical to install another transformer in parallel instead of replacing the
existing transformer by a single larger unit. The cost of a spare unit in the case of two parallel
transformers (of equal rating) is also lower than that of a single large transformer.
3. In addition, it is preferable to have a parallel transformer for the reason of reliability. With
this at least half the load can be supplied with one transformer out of service.

2
COMPONENT REQUIREMENT

Sr No Name Type Range Quantity

1 Ammeter MI 0-10 A 3
2 Wattmeter Dynamometer 1/2 A, 3
75/150/300 V
3 Voltmeter MI 0-300 V 3

3
Condition for Parallel Operation of
Transformer:
For parallel connection of transformers, primary windings of the Transformers are connected to
source bus-bars and secondary windings are connected to the load bus-bars.
Various conditions that must be fulfilled for the successful parallel operation of transformers:
1. Same polarities should be connected.
2. The two transformers should have same voltage ratio.
3. The percentage impedance should be same.
4. There should be no circulating current.

4
Advantages of Transformer Parallel Operation:

1. Maximize electrical system efficiency

2. Maximize electrical system availability:
3. Maximize power system reliability:
4. Maximize electrical system flexibility

Circuit Diagram

6
Procedure
1. Connect the circuit as shown in the previous diagram.
2. Note down the readings of all wattmeters, ammeters and voltmeters for given load. Connect
the circuit as shown in the diagram.
3. Note down the readings of all wattmeters, ammeters and voltmeters for given load.
4. Repeat the above test for different values of load
5. Take at least three readings.

7
Observations
S.No. I1 (Amps) W1(watts) I2 (Amps) W2(watts) IL=I1+I2 (Amps) WL=W1+W2

1 0.9 220 0.9 215 1.9 435

2 2 440 2 440 4 880

3 2.9 655 3 660 5.9 1315

4 4 880 4 880 8 1760

8
Result:

1. The two transformers connected in parallel share the load equally.

2. The total load current is distributed on two transformers accordingly.
I1+I2=IL
3. The total wattmeter readings are distributed on two wattmeters accordingly.
W1+W2=WL

9
Precautions
1. Transformers should be connected in such a way that they have same polarity.
2. All connections should be neat and tight.
3. Connecting leads should be perfectly insulated.
