What is Adjacency Pairs?

An adjacency pairs is a unit of conversation that contains an exchange of

one turn each by two speakers. Conversation is organized into pairs of
functionally related turns, such as question-answer; compliment-thanks;
accusation-admission or denial; request-acceptance or refusal.

Characteristics of Adjacency Pairs
Adjacency pairs are the basic unit on which sequences in conversation are built.

1. The two parts of a conversation are spoken by different individuals. It seems

odd when a speaker makes a statement before answering a question, as it
disrupts the usual sequence of adjacency pairs.
2. The parts must follow a specific order. In a typical conversation, the answer
follows the question; an invitation must be extended before it can be
accepted, and an apology needs to be made before it can be accepted.
3. The first and second parts must be correctly paired to prevent awkward
interactions.

Preferred and Dispreffered Responses
The utterance of one speaker makes a certain response of the next speaker very
likely. The acts are ordered with first part and second part and categorized as
question-answer, offer-acceptance and so on.

1. Preferred Second. Preferred second has an unmarked sequence, which is

expected. For example,

A: I think Ralph is a good writer

B: I think so too.

Therefore, question - answer; an offer - acceptance, an invitation - acceptance, a

greeting - greeting, a complaint - apology, etc are the examples of Preferred
Seconds.

Preferred and Dispreffered Responses
2. Dispreferred Second. The dispreferred second is a marked and unexpected
response. They tend to be refusals or disagreements, with some reason why the
preferred second can not be performed. For example,

A: Would it be possible for you to meet me tomorrow?

B: Well, I doubt it.

An offer - rejection, a proposal - rejection, an invitation - refusal, etc are the

examples of Dispreferred Second

consisting of two related utterances by different speakers. Their
sequential and orderly nature ensures clarity and coherence in
dialogue. When the expected order is disrupted, communication
can become confusing or awkward. Properly matched adjacency
pairs facilitate smooth and effective interactions, highlighting
their importance in everyday communication.
