MOVIE ANALYSIS

SYNOPSIS
“Shutter Island” is a psychological thriller that follows U.S. Marshals Teddy
Daniels and Chuck Aule as they investigate the disappearance of a patient
from a mental hospital for the criminally insane. As they delve into the
mysterious case, Teddy’s past traumas, including his experiences in World
War II and the death of his wife, Dolores, begin to haunt him. The
investigation leads Teddy to uncover a complex conspiracy orchestrated by
the hospital staff to break through his delusions and make him confront a
painful truth about his past. In a dramatic twist, Teddy discovers that he is
actually Andrew Laeddis, a patient at the hospital who created a false reality
to cope with the guilt of killing his wife after she murdered their children.
Teddy ultimately chooses to undergo a lobotomy, preferring to live in a
delusion rather than face the harsh reality of his actions.

Andrew Laeddis, a former U.S.
Marshal, is married to Dolores Chanal,
and they have three kids. Dolores, who
has bipolar disorder, sadly drowned
their children in a lake. Andrew,
shocked by this, couldn't believe
Dolores would do such a thing.
Overcome with grief, he ended up
killing Dolores. This tragedy sends
Andrew into a spiral of mental distress,
eventually leading him to Shutter
Island, a psychiatric institution.
Andrew, burdened by guilt and unable to forgive
himself, denies the crime he committed. To cope,
he creates elaborate stories with characters like
Teddy Daniels, Chuck Aule, Rachel Solando, and
Laeddis. In this fabricated reality, Teddy and
Chuck are U.S. Marshals investigating the
disappearance of a patient, Rachel, from a mental
hospital for the criminally insane—where Andrew
resides. Through this narrative, Andrew seeks to
save Rachel, representing his desire to save
Dolores and their children. Chuck symbolizes
Andrew's psychiatrist, Lester Sheehan, who
Andrew believes could help him. These creations
serve as a coping mechanism, shielding Andrew
from facing the harsh truth of his actions.
