Acceleration
(S7FE-IIIa-1)
Learning Objective:
1. Define Acceleration
2. Describe the motion of an object in terms of
acceleration
3. Calculate the acceleration of a moving
object.
Dictionary Meaning:

ACCELERATION
A capacity to gain
speed within a short
time.
Let’s do the Activity :
GO and ACCELERATE
Objectives:
1. Tell whether an object is accelerating or
not.
2. Determine the condition for an object
to be considered accelerating.
Materials Needed:

Motion Graph, Cartolina/Manila

Paper and Marker
Procedures :

1. Refer to the motion diagram given to your group. The

diagram shows the positions of a moving car along
the given path at constant time intervals.
2. . For this activity, assume that the time interval
between two successive (dots) positions of the car is
1 second.
3. Analyze the motion of the car as shown in the
motion diagram and answer the following guide
questions.
Guide Questions :

1. How do you describe the path followed by the

car?
2. How do you compare the distance between two
successive positions of the car?
3. What happens to the distance between two
successive positions of the car as the total time of
travel increases? What does this tell you about the
speed of the car?
Guide Questions :

4. Does the velocity of the car change?

Why/Why not?
5. Is the car accelerating? Why/why not?

GROUP
PRESENTATION
1. When can you say that an object is
accelerating?

(a) changes its speed – speeds up or slows down;

(b) changes its direction of motion
(c) changes both its speed and direction.
How do you define
acceleration?
change in velocity
Acceleration=
time
Final Velocity – Initial Velocity
Acceleration=
elapased time
V2 – V1

Your class will have a field trip to visit
one of the tourists spots in Camarines
Sur. On your way from Tara, Sipocot
to Bahao Beach, in Libmanan, the
motorcycle each of you were riding
changed its speed from 50 m/s to 80
m/s in 4 s. What is your acceleration?

a= 4s

t 30 m/s
a=
Given: 4s
Initial Velocity = 50 m/s
Final Velocity = 80 m/s
time =3s
a= 10 m/s2
A car travelling at 30 m/s slows down to 15m/s in 6 seconds.
Find its acceleration.

V2 – V1 15 m/s – 30 m/s
a=
a= 6s

t -15 m/s
a=
Given: 6s
Initial Velocity = 30 m/s
Final Velocity = 15 m/s
time =6s
a= -2.5 m/s2
A car accelerates from rest to a speed of 10m/s
in 20 seconds. What is the acceleration of the
car?

a= 0.5 m/s2

A car slows down from a speed of 20 m/s to rest

in 10 seconds. What is the acceleration of the
car?

a= -2 m/s2
When is acceleration positive? When is it
negative?
- Acceleration is positive if the speed of the object
increases and negative if the speed of the object
decreases.
- Acceleration is positive for object that speeds up
and negative for object that slows down.
A stone dropped from the second floor of a
building.

(Accelerating because its speed increases as it goes

down.)
A jeepney slowing down to a stop
to pick up a passenger.
(Accelerating because its speed decreases.)
A car travelling at a speed of 15
m/s on a straight road.
(Not accelerating because there is no
change in its speed and direction of travel.)
Steering Wheel

the car.

Clutch Brake Accelerator

Which do you prefer in life, a positive
acceleration or a negative acceleration? Defend
your answer

Are there instances in your life where you need

to have a negative acceleration? Cite Example.

Dear Father
Thank you for todays weather.
Thank you for the gift of life and family that I have through my
teachers and classmates.

This day Lord, Help us to be curious about the world around us.
Help us to be open to difficult tasks.
Help us to be determined to complete our work.
Help us to be responsible in all we do.
Help us to be accepting of people’s differences.
Help us to be kind in our thoughts and words.
Help us to be aware of our talents
Help us to be ourselves to be the best that we can be.

May all that we do brings glory and honor to you name.

In Jesus name we pray.
