WORK-LIFE BALANCE

DEFINITION

 Work-Life Balance is a broad concept which includes proper prioritizing between “work”
(career and ambition) on one hand “life” (health, pleasure, leisure, family and personal
development) on the other.
 Essentially Work-Life Balance occurs when individuals with a finite amount of mental,
physical and emotional resources allocate those resources in a way that corresponds with
their personal/professional goals.
MYTHS ABOUT WORK-LIFE BALANCE

 Myth #1 – Work-Life Balance means spending 50% of your time at work and 50% of your
time at home.
 Myth #2 – Women desire more Work-Life Balance than men.
 Myth #3 – Work-Life Balance is synonymous with Work-Family Balance or Family Support.
REALITY

 #1 – Work-Life Balance occurs when individuals with a finite amount of mental, physical
and emotional resources allocate those resources in a way which corresponds with their
personal/professional goals.
 #2 – Men and women are both affected by work and non-work demands. There are no
differences of gender in Work-Life Conflict.
 #3 – Equating Work-Life Balance and Family Support as synonyms assumes only those
with families desires balance and is a backlash to employees without children.

CONSEQUENCES OF IMBALANCE

 Obesity – Not taking time to exercise or eat well can result in obesity.
 Exhaustion – Sleeping well can add years to a person’s life. Sacrificing sleep for
work will have negative effects on health, increasing chances of getting sick.
 Emotional Problems – Stress and exhaustion can wreck emotional well-being.
TIPS FOR BETTER WORK-LIFE BALANCE

 #1 Time Management – When you plan your week days, make a point to schedule your
time with family, friends and activities that help you motivate.
 #2 Work Smarter, not Harder – Plan activities with use of effective resource so that you
can save time and energy.
 #3 Be Positive – it makes you happy and motivated to do work more effectively and
efficiently.
