WHAT IS MEMORY?

Different types of memory in

computer:
Ques- WHAT IS A
MEMORY ?
Answer-Memory plays a very important role
in a computer . It is the basic unit where data
and instruction are stored temporarily .
MEMORY UNITS
1 Byte=1 character
1 Kilobyte=1024 bytes
1 Megabyte=1024 Kilobyte
1Gigabyte =1024 Megabyte
1Terabyte =1024 gigabyte
1 Petabyte =1024 Terabyte
1Exabyte = 1024 petabyte
1 Zettabyte = 1024exabyte
1 Yottabyte = 1024 zetabyte
1brontobyte = 1024 Yottabyte
• Types Of Memory
Ans)There are three types of
memory-
Primary memory
Cache memory
Secondary memory
Difference between primary memory
and secondary memory ?
Primary memory Secondary memory
Primary memory is often Secondary memory is
known as main memory . known as backup
They are of two types – memory.

ROM.
What is a Cache Memory? What is the
process of cache memory?
Cache is a temporary storage area for
instructions and data that enhances the
CPU speed .

Primary memory-
ROM
 ROM refers to memory chips used for
storing data that can read only. The data
on ROM chips cannot be modified,
hence, the name read only memory.
Rom is non volatile. Its memory is never
lost even when the computer is switched
off.
 Types of ROM
 Programmable ROM
 Erasable programmable ROM
 Electrically EPROM (EEPROM)
Primary memory-
ROM
 RAM also called main memory,
consists of memory chips that can be
read from and written to by the
processor and other devices. It’s full
form is random access memory. It is a
volatile memory.

 Dynamic RAM
 Static RAM
 Magnetoresistive RAM
