Introduction

The play “Super Patriots and Morons” by Raisedon Baya is a

political satire set in a country experiencing severe food shortages
and long fuel and food queues under a repressive government. The
ruling party and government are portrayed as “super patriots,” or
the chosen ones, who can never do wrong, while the people are
labelled as “morons” for their perceived inability to think or act
independently. Any dissent from the people is seen as a sign of
imperialist infiltration, which must be crushed by the “Great
Leader.”

 The themes of super patriotism and morons are prevalent

throughout the play, reflecting the power dynamics between the
ruling elite and the masses during times of political instability
and economic hardship. The government’s use of fearsome
state security agents to silence dissent further underscores this
power imbalance.
z

 The play tells the story of a woman living in a non-functioning state

who expresses her frustration with failed leadership. It explores
universal questions about the nature of leadership, accountability,
transparency, and the importance of diversity of political opinion.
The themes resonate powerfully across Zimbabwe as people continue
to struggle with food and fuel shortages.

 Super Patriots and Morons, a play written by Raisedon Baya, is

a thought-provoking exploration of the complexities of identity,
loyalty, and morality in contemporary society. The characters in
the play can be broadly categorized into two groups: the super
patriots and the morons
z

 The super patriots are individuals who hold an unwavering

loyalty to their country and its values. They are portrayed as
proud, patriotic citizens who are willing to go to great lengths to
protect their nation. However, they also exhibit some negative
traits such as intolerance, close-mindedness, and a tendency to
view anyone who disagrees with them as an enemy. These
characters often hold power in society and use it to enforce their
beliefs on others.
z

 On the other hand, the morons are depicted as individuals who

lack intelligence, common sense, and a basic understanding of
the world around them. They are often portrayed as being easily
manipulated by others and making decisions based on emotions
rather than reason. These characters are often marginalized in
society and face discrimination because of their perceived lack
of intelligence.
z

 Baya’s portrayal of these characters is both nuanced and

complex. He does not present them as simple caricatures but
rather as complex individuals with strengths and weaknesses.
The super patriots may be loyal to their country, but they also
risk becoming tyrannical rulers if they allow their loyalty to blind
them to the needs and rights of their citizens. The morons may
lack intelligence, but they also possess qualities such as
empathy and compassion that can make them valuable
members of society if given the opportunity to develop these
traits.
z

 The play raises important questions about the role of identity in

shaping our beliefs and actions, the dangers of intolerance and
close-mindedness, and the importance of empathy and
compassion in creating a just society. It is a thought-provoking
work that challenges audiences to examine their own beliefs
and values critically.
