Behold, the Music of the East
Call the Tune
• Do you know that the Chinese characters that represent the
names of the countries China, Japan, and Korea also
represent their geographical locations? Korea is Chosun or
"Land of the Morning Calm," Japan or Nihon means "Land of
the Rising Sun," while China is Zhongguo/Zhonghua, which in
Chinese means "The central or middle kingdom." They "call
the tune" so to speak, in situations here in Asia that need
important decisions. In addition, these three countries are
also popular because of their ancient and interesting arts
and cultures.
Hit the Road
• China, Japan, and Korea have been three of the most
influential countries not only in Asia but in the rest of the
world. Ever since the oldest civilizations up to the present
society. Learning about their culture through music is one
way to understand the qualities of their people and why the
world looks up to them. You've probably heard some music
in Chinese, Japanese, or Korean films or television shows.
How would you describe them? What makes them unique?
How do they reflect that distinct East Asian spirit and way of
life?
Part 1:
Music of China
• What is Chinese Music?

• Chinese music is probably the most influential music in Asia, being

one of the world's largest in land area and population. The Chinese
thought that sound has an impact on the universe's harmony. They
treated music in the highest sense; it was not for entertainment, but
for calming the passions and securing public harmony. During the past
dynasties such as the Qing dynasty and before that, music's most
important purpose was for therapy and social order.
• Chinese music is based on ancient doctrines and
beliefs like those of Confucius, one of their
foremost philosophers. In Confucian teachings,
the role of music is laid out, and the qualities of
"good" music are defined. The Chinese character
for music, yuè, is the same as lè, which means
"happy," implying a harmonious relationship.
What are the functions of Chinese music?
1. Music in the service of socio-political ideals. Chinese
political leaders recognized the potential impact of music on
behavior. Music was used to preserve social order and
stability. In sociology, social order is referred to as the way
the various components of society work together to
maintain the status quo. Social structures and institutions
are among them as well as social interactions and behavior
in social situations. While this idea is present in
entertainment music genres, its highest realization is found
in the court ritual tradition.
2. Entertainment music.
• This is music performed for enjoyment during
leisure hours and not associated with work or
religious belief. Genres of entertainment music
can be found from people of different social
status. Qin and kunqu opera of central China are
usually considered not to be "classical" genres of
entertainment music.
3. Work songs.

• Songs associated with work are not large in

numbers. They are found in sub- cultures
and are more common among farmers and
laborers than among merchants and
scholars. Body work songs are associated
with activities such as tea-picking and rice-
planting.
4. Religious music.

•Outdoor ritual music and Buddhist

chants, for example, have acquired
artistic significance due to their strong
representational sense. The importance
of ritual music in popular culture could
not be overstated
