TABLETS

❑ INTRODUCTION:-
Tablets may be defined as solid dosage
forms containing medicinal substances
with or without suitable diluents,
prepared either by compression or
molding .They may be either circular flat
or biconvex in shape. Tablets are solid
dosage form which is very popular
compared to other dosage forms. The
popularity of tablets is due to the
various advantages they have over
liquid dosage forms.
❑ IDEAL CHARACTERISTICS OF TABLETS:-
❖The tablet should include the correct dose of the drug.
❖The appearance of the tablet should be elegant and its weight, size and
appearance should be consistent.
❖The drug should be released from the tablet in a controlled and
reproducible way
❖The tablet should be biocompatible, ie. not include excipients ,
contaminants and microorganisms that could cause harm to patients.
❖The tablet should be of sufficient mechanical strength to with stand
fracture and erosion during handling.
❖The tablet should be chemically, physically and microbiologically stable
during the lifetime of the product.
TABLET INSERTED ORALLY
❑ Compressed tablets:-It comprises a mixture of active substances and
excipients, usually in powder form, pressed or compacted from a powder Compressed tablets
into a solid dose. EG- Paracetamol.

❑ Enteric coated tablets:-These tablets are conventionally compressed


tablets coated with enteric coating materials which resist the dissolution

in the stomach but dissolve in the intestine.

❑ Sustained released tablets:-These tablets are designed to provide


medicaments for longer period of time in a controlled manner.

❑ Sugar coated tablets:-A sugar-coated tablet is coated with sugar to
disguise the taste. A sugar-coated tablet may taste sweeter than a film-
coated tablet.

❑ Film coated tablets:-A film coating is a thin polymer-based coat applied to
a solid pharmaceutical dosage form.

-:TABLET USED IN ORAL CAVITY:-
❑ Buccal tablets:-A small, flat lozenge intended
to be inserted in the buccal pouch (cheek),
where the active ingredient is absorbed
directly through the oral mucosa.

❑ Sublingual tablet :-Sublingual medications


are placed under the tongue. They dissolve
there, and their active ingredients are quickly
absorbed into the bloodstream. Sublingual tablet

❑ Troches and Lozenges :- A troche is a small,


hard tablet placed under the tongue,
Lozenges are the solid dosage form that
dissolves slowly into the mouth.

❑ Diluents:-The inert substances that are added to increase the bulk of the
powders for easy compression.
Example-Mannitol, starch
❑ Granulating agent :-These agents used to convert the fine particles into
granules.
Example-Mucilage of starch
❑ Binders:-These agents used to impart cohesiveness to the powders
substances.
Example-Tragacanth
❑ Disintegrants:-The substances which added in tablet to ensure disintegrating
of tablet.
Example-Magnesium aluminum silicate.
❑ Glidants:-A substances that improve tablets flowability.
Example-Talc
❑ Lubricants:-These are the substances that reduce inter-particular friction
during compression and reduce friction between tablet and die wall during
the ejection of tablet.
Example:-Talc, Magnesium Stearate
❑ Anti-adhesive agents :-These prevent the sticking of tablet surface to dies
and punches during compression.
Example:- Stearic acid, Liquid paraffin.
❑ Coloring agent :-A color additive is any dye, pigment or substance which
when added to a food, drug or cosmetic, or to the human body will impart a
color.
Example:- Indigotine
❑ Flavoring agent :-Flavoring agents are additive substances that give a tablet
an additional taste or flavor.
❑ Polymer agent: Various polymer are used are Ethyl cellulose, HPMC.
