Combustion of Fuels-II
Conversion of Volumetric Analysis into Mass Analysis

If the volumetric composition of any fuel gas is

known, it can be converted to mass composition
by applying Avogadro’s law using following
procedure:
1.Multiply the volume of each constituent by its
own molecular mass. This gives the proportional
mass of the constituents.
2.Add up these masses and divide each mass by
this total mass and express it as a percentage
3.This gives percentage analysis by mass
Example 1: The
volumetric analysis of a gas is CO2 14%, CO 1%,
O2 5%, N2 80%. Calculate the fuel gas composition by mass.
Solution:

The fuel gas composition by mass is calculated in the last

column as CO2 20.2%, CO 0.9%, O2 5.3% and N2 73.6%.
Conversion of Mass analysis into Volumetric Analysis

The conversion of mass analysis of a fuel gas

into volumetric analysis can be performed using
following procedure:
1.Divide the percentage mass of each constituent
by its own molecular mass. This gives the
proportional volume of the constituents.
2.Add these volumes and divide each volume by
this total volume and express it as a percentage
3.This gives percentage analysis by volume.
Example 2:The mass analysis of a fuel gas is CO2 13.3%, CO
0.95%, O2 8.35% and N2 77.4%. Convert this analysis into
volumetric analysis.
Solution:

The fuel gas composition by volume is calculated in the last

column as CO2 9%, CO 1%, O2 7.8% and N2 82.2%.
Example 3: The
ultimate analysis of dry coal burnt in a boiler is C
84%, H2 9% and incombustibles 7% by mass. Determine the
mass of dry flue gases per kg of coal burnt if the volumetric
composition of the flue gas is CO2 8.75%, CO 2.25%, O2 8%
and N2 81%.
Given:
C=84%=0.84 kg,
H2=9%=0.09 kg,
Incombustible=7%=0.07kg
CO2 = 8.75%= 0.0875 m3
CO = 2.25%= 0.0225 m3
O2 = 8%= 0.08m3
N2 =81%= 0.81 m3
Calculate:
i. Mass of dry flue gases per kg of coal burnt=?
Example 4:A steam boiler uses pulverized coal in the furnace.
The ultimate analysis of coal by mass is C 78%, H2 3%, O2 3%,
S 1%, ash 10% and moisture 5%. Excess air supplied is 30%.
Calculate the mass of air to be supplied and mass of gaseous
products formed per kg of coal burnt.
Given:
C=78%=0.78 kg,
H2= 3%=0.03 kg,
O2 = 3%= 0.03 kg
S = 1%= 0.01 kg Ash = 10% = 0.10 kg
Moisture = 5% = 0.05 kg Excess air supplied = 30 %
Calculate:
i.Mass of air to be supplied = ?
ii.Mass of gaseous products formed per kg of coal=?
