Education bas historically have been a core
Concept in societies over the years we have
seen Shift in paradigms of educational thought
with innovative trends and reforms in
education.
The 21st century higher education sector has
Introduction come a long way after undergoing continuous
alteration from pedagogy to andragogy.
Heutagogy a form of self determined Learning
with practices and principles rooted in
andragogy has recently resurfaced as a
learning approach in higher Education.
Paradigm shift is an important Change that
happens when the usual way of thinking about
or doing something is replaced by a new and
Paradigm different way.
Shift It is basically a set of ideas usually unwritten
that pupil have learn by develop through
education and their experiences.
The word pedagogy comes from the Greek word
“Paidagogos” in which “paida” means “child” and
‘agog” means “lead” literally translated” to lead
the child.
Pedagogy Pedagogy is the science and art of education
especially instructional theory.
It is a master plan that includes a detailed
analysis of what is to be done by a teacher.
The Concept of pedagogy is not a new concept
in the field of education.
Pedagogy is the traditional approach to teaching
primarily focused on the teacher as the Primary
source of knowledge and the student as passive
Pedagogy recipient.
In pedagogy the learning process is typically
Structured and hierarchical with the teacher
directing the content and methods of
instruction.
(i)Teacher-directed Instruction:
The teacher leads the teaching process,
setting content, pace and methods.
Stages of (ii) Assessment driven learning:
pedagogy Learning is guided by assessments to
measure and drive instruction.
(iii) passive reception:
Students mainly received information
without active participation in the learning
process.
(i) Student-centered Learning: Focusing on
student’s needs, interests and abilities to tailor
instruction accordingly.
(ii)Active Engagement: Encouraging students
to Participate actively in the learning process
through discussions, hands on activities and
Features of problem Solving tasks.
Pedagogy (iii) Differentiation: Adapting instruction to
meet the diverse needs of learners including
varying learning styles, abilities and
backgrounds.
(iv) Feedback: providing timely and constructive
feedback to guide student’s learning and
promote improvement.
(v)Collaboration: Facilitating opportunities for
students to collaborate with peers, fostering
teamwork, communication and social skills.
(vi)Critical Thinking: Encouraging students to
Features of analyze, evaluate and apply information,
Pedagogy fostering higher order thinking skills.
(vii) Reflection: Promoting opportunities for
students to reflect on their learning
experiences, goals and progress promoting
meta cognition and self awareness
The word Andragogy comes from Greek word “andr’
means adult or man “agogos” means leader of literally
translated to leading the men.
Andragogy coined by Malcolm Knowles is the theory and
practice of adult education.
Andragogy It emphasizes self-directed learning and active
participation by adult learners in their own education.
Andragogy acknowledge that adult learners have
different needs, experiences and motivations
compared to children and thus require a different
approach to learning.
(i) Adult learners are autonomous, independent and self reliant.
(ii) An Adult accumulates a growing reservoir of experience which
is rich resource for learning.
(iii) Adult learners are self-directed toward goals. They need to
know from the beginning the objectives or goals of the training
Assumptions and these need to be relevant to their roles.
(iv) Adult learners are more problem centered than subject
of centered. They need to know why they should learn something
and how it will benefit them.
Andragogy (V) Adults are motivated to learn by internal factors rather than
external ones. Some factors that motivate adults are increased
jobs satisfaction, self-esteem and quality of life.
Role of the Educator in an andragogical approach is that of tutor
and mentor with the instructor supporting the learner in
developing the capacity to became more self-directed in his or
her learning
Heutagogy is a term coined by Stewart Hase and Christ
Kenyon on Sothern cross and is also called “self
determined learning
Heutagogy is a term derived from the Greek work
“Heuriskin” which means to discover .This means to
enable someone to discover of learn something for
themselves.
Heutagogy Heutagogy is a relatively newer concept that build’s
upon and extends the principles of andragogy.
It emphasizes self determined learning and learner
autonomy even further.
In Heutagogy learners not only take responsibility for
their learning but also for the design and evaluation of
their learning experiences.
(i) self-determined Learning: setting goals, planning.
Engaging, reflecting, adjusting and applying
knowledge autonomously.
(ii) Continuous Learning: Lifelong process of staying
updated and adapting to change through formal and
Stages of informal learning.
heutagogy (iii)Reflective Practice: Self-awareness, critical
reflection and actionable insights gained from
evaluating learning g experiences.
(iv) Co-creation of knowledge: Collaboratively
contributing to knowledge through dialogue,
sharing, ideas and diverse perspectives.
The most recent list of principles of Heutagogy
given by Hase (2014) is;
Involve the learner is designing their own
learning Content and process as a partner.
Principles of Make the curriculum flexible so that now
questions and understanding can be explored as
Heutagogy new neuronal pathways are developed.
Recognize that learning is non-linear.
Individualize learning as much as possible .
Provide flexible or negotiated assessment
Enable the learner to contextualize concepts,
knowledge and new understanding.
Use experiential learning techniques
Facilitate collaborative learning.
Principles Of
Provide lot of resources and double loop and
Heutagogy triple loop learning.
Have confidence in the learner
Recognize that teaching and teacher control
Can become a block to learning.
The heutagogical approach can be viewed
progression from pedagogy to andragogy as a to
The Heutagogy with learners progressing as well in
maturity and autonomy.
Evolution
More mature learners require loss instructor
from control and course structure Can be self-
pedagogy to directed in their leaning while less mature
Heutagogy learners required mort instructor guidence and
Course Scaffolding [canning 2010].
Building upon the evolution of pedagogy to
andragogy and then to Heutagogy we have the
The Pedagogy PAH continum model.
Andragogy The PAH Continum is a tool that can help teachers
design heutagogic strategies into their practice.
Heutagogy The model is based on the following process:
Continum- (i) pedagogy: start with a known subject. The
delivery of which a teacher is confident with.
The PAH- (ii) Andragogy: Negotiate with the learners how
they might study that subject in ways that motivate
Continum them.
(iii) Heutagogy: Offer creative ways in which they
might express what they have learned.
The evolution from Pedagogy to Andragogy to
Heutagogy marks a significant paradigm shift in
education emphasizing increasing learner
autonomy and control over the learning process.
Conclusion This shift highlights the importance of
adaptability and innovation in educational
Practices to meet the evolving needs of leaners
in the modern world.
