Introduction
A boxplot (also known as a box and whiskers plot) is
another way to display quantitative data. The box and
whiskers chart shows you how your data is spread out.
Five pieces of information (the “ five-number summary
“) are generally included in the chart.
The five-number summary
• The minimum (the smallest number in the data set). The minimum is shown at
the far left of the chart, at the end of the left “whisker.”
• First quartile, Q1, is the far left of the box (or the far right of the left whisker).
• Third quartile, Q3, shown at the far right of the box (at the far left of the right
whisker).
• The maximum (the largest number in the data set), shown at the far right of the
box.
Finding the five-number summary : steps
Example 35, 28, 29, 38, 30, 34, 35, 25, 37, 29
The first quartile is the median of the data points to the left of the median.
25, 28, {29}, 29, 30
Q1=29
The third quartile is the median of the data points to the right of the median.
34, 35, {35}, 37, 38
Q3=35
Step 4: Complete the five-number summary by finding the min and the max.
Step 3
Step 2
Step 1 Draw a whisker from Q1, to
the min and from Q3
Draw a box from Q1, Q3, with

the median is 32, and Q3=35. Q1 median Q3 max
