INTRODUCTION

• In 1992 the International pharmaceutical federation FIP developed standard for pharmacy services
under the heading “ good pharmacy practice” in community and hospital pharmacy settings”

DEFINITION

• pharmacist provide quality pharmacy services to every patient .it is the practice of pharmacy that
responds to the needs of the people ,who use the pharmacists , service to provide optimal , evidence
based care.

REQUIMENT OF PREMISES
• The location of pharmacy Should such as It is easily identifIed by the public.
• The environment in the pharmacy should be neat and clean.
• It should have clearly marked word “pharmacy” , written in English as well as Local language.
• The pharmacy should also be accessible to disabled people or people using wheel chairs.
• It should have display ,counter, shelves for medicine storage counseling area waiting area billing area adequate
space for movement and waste collection boxes.
• Counselling area should have furniture (table and chairs) for comfort conversation or communication and
cabinet for keeping patient medication record ( pMR)
• It should have telephone service electronic supply refrigerator drinking water etc.
• A compounding Pharmacy for extemporaneous , prepration should have additional space and necessary
equipment.
REQUIMENT OF EQUIPMENT
• The pharmacy should be equipped with refrigerator for storage of medicine in cold temperatures and
validate from time to time .
• Counseling area should be equipped with demonstration chart patient information leaflet reference
material and other required materials.
• It should contain basic instruments like sphygmonometer glucometer, thermometer stethoscope
weight and height scale.
• The pharmacy should be preferable equipment with computer and appropriate software that can
manage inventory manage invoicing generated timely warning for expiring medicine and archive patient
medication records.
• Compounding pharmacy should be equipped with appropriate apparatus required for the preparation.
REQUIMENT OF INVENTORY CONTROL

• The pharmacy should develop and maintain ,safe effective operational and socioeconomically
acceptable procurement and inventory management . Pharmacist should ensure medicine and health
care products are readily available in the pharmacy in sufficient quantities
• Suppliers and purchasing
• The pharmacist should ensure quality supply of medicine by purchasing from supplier that meets the
standard laid down by the law.details of supplies ( name address contact number, licensea etc ) .
• Should be kept . A list of trusted supplier should be maintained and visited from time to time for audit
of premises and system. Any error made by the supplier should be reported and rectified in timely
manner.
• The pharmacists should inform regulatory authorities if any deliberate dubious activity by the supplier is
found.
• The pharmacy should have written procedure for the selection of medicine and maintain product list
with retail price including essential and life saving medicine.
• The product list should be reviewed from time to time and updated by the pharmacists.
• All the medicines received from the supplier should be checked for quantity, price , batch number and
expiry date.
• Cost effective purchasing method should be followed and the purchase record / invoice should be
maintained.
REQUIMENT OF MANPOWER

• The pharmacy should be managed under the supervision of pharmacist and other personal working in
pharmacy should be well trained .
• The pharmacy should have well documented guidelines and procedures for personal set by
management of pharmacist consulation .
• The personal in the pharmacy Should wear neat apron/ coat wear a badges displayed name and
designation.
• All Pharmacy personal Should be medically examined and adequately immunized peroidcally and
there healthdata should be achieved.
• Pharmacist working in the pharmacy should hold at least a bachelor degree in pharmacy and register
as pharmacist in india pharmacy council pharmacist should also have done adequate practical training
in community pharmacy and have adequate communication skill for patient counseling.
• Phamacy Assistant working in the pharmacy should hold at least a diploma in pharmacy and registered
as pharmacy assistant in india council. Phamacy assistant should have done adequate practical training
in community pharmacy and have adequate communication skill.
• Professionally working I the pharmacy should hold the qualification specified by drug advisory
committee and recognisedby that committee
REQUIMENT FOR STORAGE

• All medicine coming into the pharmacy should initially be quarantined and then checked for
quantity ,batch number ,expiry, integrity etc after checking they should be transferred to their
respective storage location .
• All medicine should be stored at approiate temperature protecting from excessive light dust and
humidity. Record of daily temperature should be kept in records sheet and preserved for future record.
• The medicines and shelves should be clean and dust free following standards operating procedures.
• All medicine that are to be stored in cold temperatures should be kept in the refrigerator.
• Narcotics and psychotropic drug that fall into groups “X” should be kept in separate safe with lock and
handled only by the pharmacists. Record of such drug maintained as per legal requirements.
• Shelves should be checked periodically for expiry of medicine and expired medicine should be kept
separately labeling “ expired Good Not for sale”.
• Near expiry medicine which can expire during the prescribed time should not be sold . Expired medicine
,unsend or unopened medicine are either returned to the supplier or destroyed as per in house
protocol.
REQUIMENT OF SERVICE

• The pharmacy should have well documented service strategy based on its goals
• Service strategies include home delivery of medicine special care and attention to patients like elderly
patients ,regular patient etc.
• Service manual should State in detail service offered , service time and pharmacy operation schedule.
• Service manual should enlist detail of activities , routine , delegation ,work producers and instructions
for day to day activities in pharmacy.
REQUIMENT OF DOCUMENTION

• Documentation is one of the core activities for maintaining and achieving quality.
• Pharmacist should maintain all necessary statutory documents like regulatory license , registration ,
permission etc . For operating a pharmacy and displayed if required under the law .
• All operational documents like purches invoice , sale invoice and other statutory documents should be
maintained and archived as prescribed by law.

• Hence the Good pharmacy practice standard are an important step toward the expansion and
improvement of activities of pharmacist raising the requiment to ensure the quality of public service

• Development and implementation of the of the GPP requirements into the practical activity of
pharmacist are long term and continue process ; depesite change in pharmaceutical sciences and
practice.
