Presentation on
DATA COLLECTION IN RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY

Presented by
Sathish R
Introduction to Data Collection:
1. Define data collection as the process of gathering information from various sources to
analyze and make informed decisions.
2. Highlight the importance of clear objectives and understanding the purpose of data
collection.

Survey:
Definition: A survey is a technique used to gather information regarding a specific variable from
respondents within a population.
Purpose: Surveys are commonly used in descriptive research. They aim to collect data on
various aspects such as behavior, attitudes, motivations, demographic characteristics, and lifestyle.
Data Collection: Surveys involve structured data collection using methods like observation,
interviews, questionnaires, or case studies.
Experiment:
•Definition: An experiment is a systematic and logical scientific procedure where one or more
independent variables are manipulated to test a hypothesis. The goal is to observe changes in one or
more dependent variables while controlling for extraneous variables.
•Purpose: Experiments are commonly used in experimental research. They aim to establish cause-
and-effect relationships.

Types of Data Collection:

•Primary Data Collection:
• Gather original and firsthand information directly from the source or target population.
• Methods include surveys, interviews, observations, experiments, and focus groups.
• Often used in market research, social research, and scientific studies.
•Quantitative Data Collection:
• Gather numerical data for statistical analysis.
• Methods include surveys, experiments, and structured data collection.
• Used to quantify variables systematically and objectively.

•Secondary Data Collection:

• Gather information from existing sources that have already been collected and analyzed
by someone else.
• Sources include published reports, books, journals, websites, and government
publications.
•Qualitative Data Collection:
• Collect non-numerical data such as opinions, experiences, and feelings.
• Techniques include interviews, focus groups, observations, and document analysis.
• Commonly used in social sciences, psychology, and humanities.

Considerations for Effective Data Collection:

1. Research Aim:
1. Clearly define the research question or objective.
2. Type of Data:
1. Decide whether qualitative or quantitative data is needed.
3. Methods and Procedures:
1. Select appropriate data collection methods.
2. Plan how to collect, store, and process the data.
