Flash Memory Storage

• Flash memory is a type of nonvolatile memory

that can be erased electronically and rewritten
more than once.
• Flash memory is also used in newer PCs for BIOS
instructions; they can be updated electronically
on flash memory. The chip does not need to be
replaced, as a ROM chip would.

1
Solid State Drive (SSD)

• A solid-state drive (SSD) is a storage device that

typically uses flash memory to store data, instructions,
and information.
• Flash memory chips are a type of solid-state media,
which means they consist entirely of electronic
components, such as integrated circuits, and contain
no moving parts.
• The lack of moving parts makes flash memory storage
more durable and shock resistant than other types of
media, such as magnetic hard disks or optical discs.
2
SSD

• SSDs are available in a variety of form factors

including 3.5 inches, 2.5 inches, and 1.8 inches.
• SSDs are used in all types of computers, including
servers, desktops, laptops, tablets, and a variety
of mobile devices, such as portable media players
and DV cameras.
• Some computers have both a hard disk and an
SSD.

SSD

• SSDs have several advantages over magnetic hard disks:

• Faster access times (can be more than 100 times faster)
• Faster transfer rates
• Generate less heat
• Less power consumption (leads to longer battery life)
• Longer life (more than 10 times longer)
• Quieter operation
• More durable
• Lighter weight
• Defragmentation is not required
5
SSD

• SSD Disadvantages
• The disadvantages of SSDs are that they typically
have lower storage capacities than hard disks.
• The cost of SSD is higher than hard disk.

6
USB Flash Drives

• A USB flash drive is a portable flash memory

storage device that you plug in a USB port, which
is a special, easily accessible opening on a
computer or mobile device (Figure 2).
• USB flash drives are convenient for mobile users
because they are small and lightweight.
• With a USB flash drive, users easily transfer
documents, photos, music, and videos from one
computer to another.

Flash Memory in Devices as a chip

• Flash memory chips also store data and programs

on many mobile devices and peripheral devices,
such as smartphones, portable media players,
printers, digital cameras, automotive devices, and
digital voice recorders.
• When you enter names and addresses in a
smartphone, for example, a flash memory chip
stores the data.

9
Memory Cards

• A memory card is a removable flash memory device that you

insert and remove from a slot in a computer, mobile device,
or card reader/writer.
• Memory cards contain flash memory on a removable device
instead of a chip.
• Common types of memory cards include
• SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity)
• SDXC (Secure Digital Expanded Capacity)
• miniSD
• microSDHC
• microSDXC
• CF(CompactFlash)
• Memory Stick PRO Duo, 10
Types of Memory Cards

Capacities of memory cards vary.

• CompactFlash (CF): 512MB -100 GB
• SD: 2 GB
• SDHC: 2 GB - 32 GB.
• SDXC: over 32 GB - 2 TB
