Properties of Regular

and Irregular Polygons

Learning Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:
1. Define a polygon.
2. Classify the polygon according to its sides and as
regular or irregular.
3. Name, describe, and compare regular and irregular
polygons and polygons with 5, 6, 8, or 10 sides
4. Work collaboratively and individually in doing the
given activity.

Describing
Polygons
Polygons
They are closed-plane
figures formed by line
segments that meet at a
common point. These line
segments also known as sides
meet at a common point
called vertex.
DECAGON

In geometry, a polygon having ten

sides or a ten-sided polygon is
called a decagon or ten-gon. It
also has ten vertices and ten
angles.
HEXAGON

A 2D geometric polygon that has

six sides and six angles. The
internal angles of a regular
hexagon add up to 720 degrees.
O C TA G O N

Octagon is a polygon that has 8

sides and 8 angles. That means the
number of vertices and edges of an
octagon is 8, respectively.
H E P TA G O N

A heptagon is a polygon that

has seven sides. It is a closed
figure having 7 vertices. A
heptagon is also sometimes
called a Septagon.
P E N TA G O N

A two-dimensional shape
with 5 sides is known as a
pentagon. We call it a 5 sided
polygon because it consists of
5 sides and 5 angles.
Properties of Regular
and Irregular Polygons
Polygons
Equilateral Polygon
Equiangular polygon
Regular Polygon
Irregular Polygon
Equilateral Polygon

is a polygon whose sides are

all congruent
Equiangular polygon

Is a polygon whose all angles

are congruent.
Regular Polygon

Is a polygon that is both

equilateral and equiangular.
Irregular Polygon

Is a polygon whose sides and

angles are not equal
Which is Polygon and
not polygon?
Polygons
The figures below are polygons.
They are closed, plane figures,
made of line segments, and the
segments intersect only at their
endpoints
Not Polygons
Not a plane figure. Sides do not
intersect at their endpoint.
Naming a Polygon
A polygon is named using its
vertices.
B

A C
The vertices are points A, B, and C. So, the
triangle may be called triangle ABC, triangle
BCA, triangle CAB, triangle ACB.
Sides of triangles ABC are AB, BC, CA.
Interior angles of triangle ABC are BAC,
BCA, and ABC.
Wrap up!

In your notebook, draw an

example of a polygon,
name it, and then write the
sides and interior angles
below your drawing.
Lets Try!

Complete the table in your

worksheet. (write the sides
and the interior angles)
RULES

Describe and name each polygon.
