FENESTRATION

Fenestration in architecture refers to

the openings in a building’s facade,
such as doors, windows and skylights.
The are basically anything that allows
the passage from outside to inside.
Functional Attributes
• Functional attributes defines
the necessity of an object. It
also informs about the shape
and properties necessary for
the performance of that
function.
• The primary functions of the
fenestration are to provide
Light, Ventilation and View.
• The location of an opening affects the
Light manner in which natural light enters a room
and illuminates it.

Opening at the centre of a wall

makes it appear as a bright spot
of light on a darker surface

When an opening is at the edge of

a wall, then the light washes away
on the adjacent wall and makes
the room brighter

Other factors like shape,

articulation and sizes of openings
also affect the light entering a
room through openings
• The purpose of ventilation in buildings is to
Ventilation provide fresh air for breathing by diluting
the pollutants originating in the building.
Building ventilation has 3
basic elements:
1. Ventilation rate
2. Airflow direction
3. Air distribution or airflow
pattern

•Natural forces ( wind , air

pressure, etc ) drive outdoor
air indoor through
fenestration controls such as
windows, doors, ventilators,
chimneys, etc.

•Natural ventilation depends on

climate and building design.
Well designed and maintained
ventilaton systems can generally
provide a high ventilation rate
more economically, due to use
of natural forces and large
openings.
HOW VENTILATION WORKS
• Fenestration is the interface between inside and
View outside. It makes sure that the beauty of the
outside is received in the comfort of the inside
CONFIGURATION
• The fenestration pattern and configuration involve the area,
shape, location and relative positioning of the windows. This
would affect the air movement, daylight and glare indoors. If
unshaded, the area would also affect radiative heat gain.
FENESTRATION ORIENTATION

• The orientation of the fenestration

determines the amount of radiation incident
on the opening. The orientation with respect
to the air pattern could increase or decrease
natural ventilation.
FENESTRATION CONTROL
Fenestration controls are used to
• trap solar radiation or cut it off,
• increase daylight level,
• keep out insects (in the process reducing air speed)
and
• modify air velocities.
• They are, therefore, able to affect and control heat
gain, daylight and ventilation.
• Glazing is the most commonly used control device for
trapping solar radiation.
FENESTRATION OPTIONS
STACK EFFECT

• Ventilation, i.e., both the supply of fresh air

and convective cooling, involves themovement of
air at a relatively slow rate.
• The motive force can be either thermal or
dynamic (wind).
• The stack effect relies on thermal thermal forces,
forces, set
up by density difference (caused by
temperature difference )between the indoor
and out door air.
• It can occur through an open window; the
warmer and lighter indoor air will flow out at
the top and the cooler, denser out door air
will flow in at the b tt o om.
• The principle is same as wind generation.
