HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

FOR THIS WEEK WE ARE NOW IN
FOURTH QUARTER, MODULE 1 SO
LISTEN ATTENTIVELY.

HUMAN DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

LEARNING COMPETENCY

Explain ingestion,absoprtion,and
excretion(S8LT-Iva-13).
OBJECTIVES
1.Describe the coordinated functions of
the organs of the digestive system.

2.Define ingestion ,digestion,absorption

and excreation of food.
3.Describe the functions of those parts in
relation to ingestion,digestion,absorption,
Before we begin to our next topic, let
us have a short review on your
previous lesson.

ORGANISM
GUESS THE ORGAN AND BODY
SYSTEM!!!!
THESE BODY
PARTS NOT
ONLY HELP
YOU EAT,BUT
THEY ALSO
HELP YOU
TALK.
WHAT IS IT?
YOU ARE BORN
WITH ABOUT
10,000 TASTE
BUDS ON THIS
PART OF YOUR
BODY.
WHAT IS IT?
THIS SYSTEM
BREAKS DOWN
AND HANDLES
FOOD.
WHAT IS IT?
THIS IS THE
MAJOR ORGAN
IN THE
DIGESTIVE
SYSTEM.
WHAT IS IT?
THIS IS THE
LARGEST
GLAND IN THE
BODY.
WHAT IS IT?
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
*The organs and glands in the body
that are responsible for digestion.
*Involve in the breakdown of foods into
simpler nutrients to be absorbed by our
body.
*Responsible for the survival of the
human beings and animals.
DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
TYPES OF DIGESTION:

1.Physical or Mechanical Digestion:

*involves the breaking up of into small pieces
/particles,pushing the food down the food tube,
and mixing with its digestive juices.
2.Chemical Digestion:
*is the breakdown of the complex molecules, such
as proteins, starch fats contained if foods into
soluble molecules by the action of digestive
enzymes.
PHASES OF DIGESTION

*1.Ingestion-is the process from which the

body take in the food through the mouth for
digestion,absorption and elimination
*2.Digestion-the process of breaking down
food by mechanical and enzymztic action in
the alimentary canal into substances that
can be used by the body.
PHASES OF DIGESTION
*3.Absorption-the process by which the end
products if digestion pass through the membrane
lining the small intestine and enter the
bloodstream..
*the release of digested food into the blood
stream.
*4.Assimilation-is the process of absorption of
vitamins,minerals,and other chemicals from food
within the gastrointestinal tract.
*is the use of digested food in the organisms cells.
PHASES OF DIGESTION

5.Excretion-the process of
eliminating or expelling waste
matter.
It is also called Egestion,the
removal materials from the body in
the form of feces.
WHERE DOES
DIGESTION BEGIN?
A.THE ORAL CAVITY
The mouth or the oral
cavity is the first portion
of the digestive tract or
alimentary canal.
*The process of
digestion begin once the
food enter through the
mouth
TEETH
Teeth-is a hard
calcified structure
found in the jaws(or
mouth) of many
vertebrates and used
to break down food.
TOUNGE
A long muscular
structure that helps
mix the food with
saliva.
SALIVARY GLANDS
1.Parotid gland-lies in front of
ear,empties saliva near the second
upper molar.
2.Sublingual gland-lies under the floor
of the mouth;empties saliva by
numerous sublingual ducts.
3.Submandibular gland-lies deep in
the mouth;empties saliva on either
side of the lingual frenulum(small fold
under the tounge)
B.PHARYNX AND
ESOPHAGUS
PHARYNX/THROAT
is a muscular tube that
connects the oral and
nasal cavity to the
larynx and esophagus
*a flap called epiglottis
closes the air openings
when food is
swallowed.It prevents
the bolus from entering
the trachea and
ensures food enters the
esophagus
ESOPHAGUS
A straight muscular tube
that is about 10 inches(25
cm) long which connects
the mouth with the
stomach
THE STOMACH
Is a J-shaped organ in
which the major part of
digestion of food occurs.
A pear shape.
THE SMALL INTESTINE

The small intestine is a

coiled tube about seven
meters long.
LIVER
Located below the
diaphragm.
The largest gland in the
body
GALLBLADDER
The gallbladder is a pear-
shaped sac located
under the liver
PANCREAS
Pancreas is a
soft,oblong gland that
lies behind the
stomach
THE LARGE INTESTINE
*it is also called
colon
*larger diameter,but
shorter(5ft)
THE RECTUM

The site of feces

formation and
temporary storage of
undigested food.
THE ANUS
The site where
feces are expelled
out of the body.
GENERALIZATION
SUMMARY OF THE PROCESSES IN THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM STEPS IN DIGESTION

* What Breakdown of food in mouth by teeth and enzymes in

Group of organs tht break down food in the saliva
order to absorb its nutrients.
*Why Transfer of partially digested food through esophagus
Body can absord simpler forms of food
to generate energy.
Further digestion in stomach by digestive juices
