Unit-5

Frederick Winslow Taylor

SCIENTIFIC MANAGEMENT
F. W. Taylor—Father of Scientific
Management
• F. W. Taylor (1856-1915)
• Taylor experimented in three companies
1. Miduale Steel’s
2. Semorids Rolling Machine
3. Bethlem Steel
• He is also known as the Father of Scientific
Management as he wanted to propound
scientific logic in production process—to find a
method in madness
4 Principles of Scientific Management

1. Science, not the rule of thumb:

• Taylor suggested the management as a
science. Every decision to be taken or
activities to be performed must be based on
scientific facts and logics.
• We should go away with old techniques and
follow the scientific way which is the correct
way of working in an organization
2. Harmony, not discord:
• He told that inside the organizations, there
should be harmony among the workers and
there should not be any dispute between the
workers.
• Friendly nature shall be the essence for the
proper working of the organizations. The
workers must maintain peace and friendly
relations within the organization.
3. Cooperation and not individualism:
• It is the extension of that harmony and not
discord.
• It states that there should be cooperation
among the worker and different departments.
• Since all the departments are interdependent
on each other so there should be a spirit of
cooperation rather than internal competition.
4. Development of each and everyone in
his/her greatest efficiency and prosperity:
• Taylor suggested that the workers and
management are complementary to each
other.
• Every worker should be made efficient and
expert by properly identifying his talent and
giving him opportunities.
Techniques of Scientific Management
• Netted Study: this is the study of finding the best method of
performing a specific job.
• Time Study: this is the study of finding the standard or
optimum time to be taken to perform a given task or to
complete an activity.
• Motion Study: This is the study to eliminate or reduce the
unnecessary motions of the workers during the work so that
the speed of work can be increased.
• Fatigue Study: This study is to know about the frequency and
duration of interval given to the worker between the work
schedule. Rest or interval was necessary to improve their
performance.
Differential Payment
• Taylor wanted to make a distinction between
efficient and inefficient workers and he was in favor
of giving incentives to efficient workers.
• Taylor founded the differential piecework system
and related incentives with production. under this
plan, a worker received a low piece rate if he
produced the standard number of pieces and a high
rate if he surpassed the standard.
• He was also of the opinion that the attraction of a
high piece rate would encourage the workers to
increase the production.
Concept of FUNCTIONAL FOREMANSHIP (8)

1. INSTRUCTION CARD CLERK: the instruction card clerk

defines the task to be performed by the workers
along with the necessary instructions to carry out
the task.
2. ROUTE CLERK: the route clerk defines and instructs
about the procedure and timing of doing a given
task.
3. TIME AND COST CLERK: The time and cost clerk
defines the standard time to complete a given
take and the cost involved there in
4. DICIPLINARIAN: it will be responsible for the overall
planning function and ensures that all work will be done
properly.
5. SPEED BOSS: he is responsible for maintaining the speed of
production and ensures that whether the work performed
by the worker with proper speed or not.
6. REPAIR BOSS: is responsible for maintaining all the
machines and tools in proper working conditions so that
the production work would not be affected.
7. GANG BOSS: he is the representative or the leader of a
small group of worker who will be responsible for all
activities performed by the group.
8. INSPECTOR: he will check the quality of goods produced
and if it is not up to the mark than he will investigate the
reasons and check the overall production system.
