“LEARNING OUTCOMES” THE STUDENT WILL ABLE TO ; • UNDERSTAND WHAT IS DRUGS • ANALYZE THE THREE CLASSIFICATION OF DRUGS ON HOW TO OBTAIN AND ABUSED • KNOW THE 3 CATEGORIES OF DRUGS WHICH MAY AFFECTS OUR BODY. WHAT IS DRUGS? - Is a chemical substance used as a medicine or in making medicines, which affects the body and mind and have potenial for drug abuse. Without an advice or prescription from a physician, drugs can be harmful. CATEGORIES OF DRUGS W/C MAY AFFECT OUR BODY The Prescriptive Drug - These are drugs requiring written authorization from a doctor to allow a purchase. The pharmacist should never allow the consumer to request them knowingly w/o first consulting a doctor. Over - the Counter Drugs (OTC)- These are non prescription medicine, which may be purchased from any pharmacy or drugstore w/o any written authorization from a doctor. The “Self- Medication Syndrome”- is found in users and would be users of drug whose sources of information are people or literature other that doctors, pharmacist and health workers. These are group of drugs, which suppress vital body functions especially those of THE the brain or central nervous DEPPRESANTS (DOWNERS) system with the resulting impairment of judgment, hearing, speech and muscular coordination. EXAMPLE OF DEPRESSANT

Amphetamines – used medically for weight reducing in obesity, relief of mind depression and treatment. 2. Cocaine – taken orally or sniffed as to achieved euphoria or an intense feeling of highness. 3. Caffeine- It is present in coffee, tea, chocolate drinks and some wake-up pills. 4. Nicotine - an active component of tobacco, which acts as a powerful stimulant of the central nervous system. A drop of pure nicotine can easily kill a person 5. Shabu/ “Poor man’s cocaine” - chemically known as methamphetamine HCL. It is a central nervous system stimulant and sometimes called “uppers” or “speed”. It is white, colorless crystal or crystalline powder with a bitter numbing taste. The Hallucinogens (Psychedelic)
Consist of variety of mind altering drugs, which
distort reality, thinking and perceptions of time. Sound space and sensation. The user experience hallucinations (false perception) which at times can be strange. Marijuana - It is the most commonly abused hallucinogen – in the Philippines because it can be grown extensively in the country. Many users choose to smoke marijuana for relaxation. Activity! 1.
