Aim
To Determine the Zener diode characteristics and determine the line
and load regulation characteristics using its as a voltage regulator.
Apparatus required
• Zener diode.
• Regulated power supply.
• Connecting wires.
• CRO.
• Multimeter resistive load.
Zener Diode
Zener diodes are semiconductor devices that allow current to flow in both
directions but specialize in current flowing in reverse. Also known as breakdown
diodes, Zener diodes are the most common electronic components used as stable
voltage references for electronic circuits.
Theory
• A P-N junction is a heavly doped P-N junction diode specially made to
operate in the break down region. A P-N junction diode normally
doe’snot conducts when the reversed biased. but if the revers bias is
the included at the particular volage it starts conducting heavly this
voltage is called break down voltage high current through the diode
can properly. damage the device.
To avoid the high current we connect a resister in a series with Zener
diode. Once the diodes stars conducting it maintain almost constant
voltage across the terminals whatever maybe the current through iy i.e.it
has very low dynamic resistance it is used in voltage regulators.

STATIC CHARACTERISTICS:-
Procedure
Connection are made as per the circuit diagram.
The required power supply would voltage is increased in steps.
The forward current (If) and the forward voltage (Vr) are observed and the voltage on
y-axis.
Zener characteristics is measured for that given Zener diode.
note the tabulator form.
A graph is ploted between between forward current (If) an x- axis the forwored
voltage(Vf)an X-axis.
A revers bias characteristics reverse bias voltage is inversed and revers bias current is
observed. and then noted in the tabular form.
a graph is ploted between reverse current on X-axis and the reaverse bias in the
LOAD REGULATION AND LINE REGULATION :-

Connect the circuit as per circuit diagram.

By changing the load resistant constant i/p voltage is applied now the
reading of output voltage voltmeter (V0=V1).
For the line regulation load is kept constant and i/p voltage is inversed
value and output voltage is observed.
Precaution
I) The Zener diode terminal should be properly identified.
II) While the determine the load regulation ,load should be immediately shorted.
III) Should be inversed that the applied voltage and current do not exeed the rating of
diode.
