My Understanding of HIV / AIDS
• HIV stands for Human
Immunodeficinency Virus;it directly
attacks and weakens the human
immune system which leads to AIDS

AIDS stands for Acquired Immune

Deficiency Syndrome ,
It is not deadly as such but weakens
the immune system so significantly
that a person suffering from AIDS
can easily die from the common cold
which has a less than 0.1% chance
of death in healthy adults
HIV/AIDS Prevalence in India
• According to the World Bank:
• The HIV epidemic in India is concentrated among vulnerable
populations.
• High-risk factors include unprotected sex between sex workers
and clients, and injecting drug use with contaminated equipment.

Key groups with high and rising HIV prevalence rates include sex
workers and drug users.
• India's National AIDS Control Organization (NACO states that the
majority of HIV infections result from unprotected heterosexual
intercourse.
Prevention of HIV/AIDS
• Get tested for HIV
• Choose less risky sexual
behaviors.
• Use condoms every time you
have sex.
• Limit your number of sexual
partners
• Get tested and treated for STDs
• Talk to your health care provider
about pre-exposure prophylaxis
(PrEP)
• Do not inject drugs
Consequences of HIV/AIDS
• (i) Health Decline: HIV weakens immunity, leading to
increased vulnerability to infections.

• (ii) Social Stigma: HIV/AIDS sufferers face discrimination,

worsening the emotional impact.

• (iii) Orphanhood: AIDS-related parental loss contributes to a

rising number of orphaned children, straining social systems.

• (iv) Economic Impact: HIV/AIDS hampers workforce

productivity, imposing a significant economic burden.

• (v) Mental Health: Battling stigma and the virus's effects can
lead to mental health challenges like depression and anxiety.
Negative Effects of Addiction
1. Correlation with HIV/AIDS:
• Substance abuse is strongly linked to the spread of HIV/AIDS.
• Risky behaviors associated with addiction increase susceptibility to
infection
2. Impact on Youth:
• Addiction negatively affects the youth demographic.
• Impaired judgment from substance abuse escalates risky behaviors
among young individuals
3. Family Strain:
• Substance abuse strains family dynamics.
• Interpersonal relationships suffer due to the disruptive effects of
addiction.
4. Societal Consequences:
• Addiction contributes to societal issues.
• The spread of HIV/AIDS is exacerbated by substance abuse, impacting
the broader community.
NACO Initiative: NACP III
1. NACP-III Overview:
- Launched July 2007 to combat HIV in India.
- Aims to Halt and Reverse the Epidemic by enhancing prevention and
integrating Care, Support & Treatment services.

2. Program Foundation:
- Scientifically evolved program with robust policies and operational guidelines.
- Grounded on a structured framework of rules and norms.

3. Strategic Goals:
- Focus on High-Risk Groups (HRG) and General Population.
- Integrates Prevention and Care, Support & Treatment (CST) services.

4. Key Pillars:
- Scale up prevention for HRG and General Population.
- CST services vital for AIDS control efforts.

5. Supporting Activities:
- Strategic Information Management and Institutional Strengthening.
- Provides technical, managerial, and administrative support at all levels.
Global Perspectives on HIV/AIDS
• UNAIDS is leading a process for the development of updated
HIV targets and estimates of the resources needed for the
global AIDS response up to 2030.
• The outputs from the process will guide the global AIDS
response from 2021 to 2030 by informing the decision-making
of major global partners and national target-setting and
strategic planning.
• The target-setting process was launched in mid-2018 and will
last until mid-2021.

• Technical inputs are being made through six consultative

thematic groups on: testing and treatment; primary
prevention; social enablers; costs and resources; integration;
and longer-term technologies.
Red Ribbon Club
1.Red Ribbon Club is a movement started by the Government of India in
Educational Institutions through which students will be making awareness of
AIDS.
2.The club organizes awareness camps on AIDS at regular intervals in
village areas. The volunteers engage themselves in distributing pamphlets
regarding AIDS and the way of living.
3.The objectives of this programme are:
• To instill life skills into youths to live better and healthier life.
• Increasing the capacity of the education system in teaching, training of
various basic health aspects and helping the adolescents and youths for
achieving positive health.
• To ensure that every college going youth in the state is equipped with
conceptual knowledge about various basic health aspects which he may
possibly encounter during his life.
• To motivate youth and build their capacity as peer educators and change
agents by developing their skills on leadership, negotiation, and team
building.
