Frequency Modulation (FM)
Applications
Conclusion
Frequency Demodulation
Frequency demodulation is the process of extracting the original
message signal from a frequency-modulated carrier wave. The most
common demodulation techniques include the use of frequency
discriminator and phase-locked loop (PLL).
Frequency Discriminator: A frequency discriminator converts
frequency variations in the FM signal into amplitude variations,
which are then converted back to the original message signal.
Phase-Locked Loop (PLL): A PLL is a control system that locks
the phase of an output oscillator to the phase of an input signal. It is
widely used for FM demodulation due to its simplicity and accuracy.
Frequency Modulation (FM)
Frequency Modulation (FM) is a technique used to encode information in a carrier
wave by varying its frequency in accordance with the amplitude of the input signal
(modulating signal). Unlike amplitude modulation (AM), where the amplitude of the
carrier wave is varied, FM keeps the amplitude constant and varies the carrier
frequency.
Applications:

▪FM radio broadcasting (superior sound quality and noise immunity compared to AM
radio).

▪ Audio transmission in television.

▪ Two-way radio communication (e.g., police, aviation, marine radio).

Applications
- FM radio receivers.

- Sound transmission in television.

- Communication systems where signal fidelity and noise immunity are critical.
Conclusion
Frequency Modulation (FM) encodes information by varying the frequency of the
carrier wave. It offers better noise immunity and fidelity compared to AM but requires a
larger bandwidth.
Demodulation of FM can be achieved using frequency discriminators or phase-locked
loops, converting frequency variations back to the original message signal.
FM is extensively used in radio broadcasting, television sound transmission, and
various communication systems.
