Sign Language

Introduction
A sign language, a means of communication through
bodily movements, especially of the hands and arms, used
when spoken communication is impossible or not desirable.

A sign language are as rich and complex as any oral


language, but they are not “real language”.

It is a part of non verbal communication.


Types of Sign Language
ASL-American Sign Language

A form of sign language developed


in the US and used also in English-
speaking parts of Canada.

It has both manual and non manual


features.

 ASL is a language completely


separate and distinct from English
Fingerspelling
A way to represent a word by spelling out letter by letter.

Each of the 26 letters of the alphabet have an individual


hand shape.
BSL-British Sign Language

British Sign language is a


sign language used in the
United Kingdom and is the
first or preferred language
among the deaf community
in the UK.
Advantages
1.Helpful for deaf people.

Enables them to pursue


education.

Enables them to
contribute in decision
making.

Have the right to use sign


language in all areas of life.
2.Helpful for people with ASD

Learning a sign language can be a helpful communication tool


for some children with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder).
3.Listening with eyes.

When using a sign language, a person must engage in constant


eye contact with the person who is speaking.
4. More expressive.
Facial expressions in sign languages can express both emotion
and grammatical information.
5.Advantages over spoken languages.

Limitations Of Sign Language

Sign language, whether using visual signs or sound


signals can communicate only elementary and simple
ideas.

It can not be a substitute for verbal communication.

Sign language is quite likely to be misunderstood.

In verbal communication spot correction can be made


easily. It is not possible in sign language.
Conclusion

The use of sign language provides children with a visual


mode of communication that can help to enhance their
language skills, improve their social skills, and increase
their access to information and communication. By
providing children with hearing loss with a way to
communicate and participate in social interactions, sign
language can play a crucial role in their overall
development and success.
