WHAT IS RUST ?
Rusting is an oxidation reaction. The iron
reacts with water and oxygen to form
hydrated iron(III) oxide, which we see as
rust. Here is the word equation for the
reaction.

iron + water + oxygen →

hydrated iron(III) oxide.
WHY DOES RUST OCCUR ?
• When acidic substances (including water) come in contact with
metals, such as iron and/or steel, rust begins to form. Rust is the result of
corroding steel after the iron (fe) particles have been exposed to oxygen and
moisture (e.G., Humidity, vapor, immersion).
ADVERSE EFFECTS OF RUSTING ON
METALS
• – It can severely affect the metals and makes them weaker. The effective functioning of a car
depends on the strength of most of its parts. Iron used in suspension struts and coil springs of a car
are not very strong. So these are the parts that get disintegrated first due to rust. It is important to
keep braking components away from corrosion, because the safety of the vehicle depends on it.

• – Rust can cause the metal parts to get stuck when they are supposed to slide over each other.
• – Rusty car mufflers and the outer bodies of the car can develop holes in them due to rust.
• – It affects the magnetic properties of a metal.
• – Iron is a good conductor of electricity. But rust is an insulator and when it affects iron, it decreases
its conductivity. If there is any electric connection in the car made with iron, it can go bad with
rusting.
HOW DO WE PREVENT
RUSTING?
1. GALVANIZING- IS A METHOD OF RUST
PREVENTION. THE IRON OR STEEL
OBJECT IS COATED IN A THIN LAYER OF
ZINC. THIS STOPS OXYGEN AND WATER
REACHING THE METAL UNDERNEATH -
BUT THE ZINC ALSO ACTS AS
A SACRIFICIAL METAL. ZINC IS MORE
REACTIVE THAN IRON, SO
IT OXIDIZES IN PREFERENCE TO THE
IRON OBJECT.
HOW DO WE PREVENT
RUSTING ?
2. Greasing- A cost effective way to protect against rust is using an
organic coating which forms a barrier against corrosive elements. Oil
based coatings are ideal for preventing the penetration of water and
oxygen.
HOW DO WE PREVENT
RUSTING?
3. Prevent rust with protective
coating applications
Dipping metal objects, such as clocks,
into a bluing solution of water, sodium
hydroxide, and potassium nitrate
provides strong corrosion resistance.
This method is called bluing.
Commercially available rust prevention
products in the form of aerosol sprays
or cloth wipes also can protect metal
objects.
