LO: Why use encryption?.

Success criteria: Students can explain how encryption is used.

Instructions: In this session I will discuss encryption and explain

why it is used, please update your notebooks for reference!
Why use encryption?
Encryption is a method of scrambling a message so that it
cannot be understood if someone else reads it.

Decryption means unscrambling an encrypted message so that it

makes sense again.

Hopefully, only the intended recipient is able to successfully

decrypt the message.
How is encryption used?
Messages sent between computers are passed across a network
and any computer on that network is able to read the messages.

People often send sensitive information across the internet and

encryption makes it harder to read an encrypted message if it is
intercepted.

Encryption helps keep sensitive information secret.

Where is encyption used?
Whenever you buy something on the online, you enter sensitive
information such as your debit or credit details and your address
onto a web page and it is sent across the internet.

It is, therefore, important to check that the data is encrypted

beforeit is sent.
Secure website address?
Web addresses that begin with https:// use encryption;

web addresses that begin with http:// don't.

This is sometimes hard to spot, so always look for the padlock

and never send personal or private information to a website
without the padlock!
