ALIGNMENT
BELT MISALIGNMENT &
 CORRECTION
Parallel Misalignment:
 (A) Measuring parallel

 Angular Misalignment:
 (B) Using a straight edge
 (C) Using a piece of
string

 Correct Alignment:
 (D) Correct alignment
means that the grooves
of the pulleys are
aligned
BELT
ALIGNMENT
Accurate belt alignment can
help to:
 Increase bearing life
 Increase machinery uptime,
efficiency and productivity
 Reduce wear on pulleys and belts

 Reduce friction and thereby energy

consumption
 Reduce noise and vibration

 Reduce costs of replacing

components and machinery
BELT
REPLACEMENT
&
ALIGNMENT
PROCEDURE
SAFETY
FIRST

 LOTOTO procedure
to be followed
RELIEVE BELT
TENSION

 Loosen the drive and

move the pulley closer
together to facilitate
the removal of the old
belts and to insure
installation of the new
belts without damage
INSPECT DRIVE
ELEMENTS
 Inspect and replace
faulty or damaged
machine elements
such as Pulley, worn
bearing or bent shaft

 Pulley should be
cleaned
INSPECT
SHEAVES
 Pulley condition

 Never install new

belts without
inspection of
Pulley

 Look for worn groove

sidewalls, shiny
Pulley groove
bottom, wobbling
and damaged Pulley
SELECT REPLACEMENT
BELTS
 Never mix new
and used belts

 Nevermix belts
from different
manufacturer

 Always replace
with the right
type of belt
INSTALLING NEW
BELTS
 Place
the new belts
on the pulleys

 Donot force the

belts on the pulleys
by using:
 Screw driver
 By rolling the pulleys
CHECK SHEAVE
ALIGNMENT
 The straight-edge
should make
contact at two
points along the
outside perimeter
of both pulleys
 V-Belt pulley
alignment should
be within a
tolerance of 1/16”
per 12” of drive
center distance
CHECK BELT DEFLECTION /
TENSION
Belt deflection / tension
should be
1/ 64” per Inch
CHECK BELT DEFLECTION /
TENSION
