Common Networking Cables

• Ethernet Cable is one of the most popular forms

of network cable used on wired networks.
Ethernet cables connect devices on local area
networks such as PCs, routers, and switches.
Ethernet cable is a Twisted pair it is a type of
copper cabling that is used for telephone
communications and most Ethernet networks. A
pair of wires forms a circuit that transmits da-ta.
The pair is twisted to provide protection against
crosstalk, the noise generated by adjacent pairs
of wires in the cable.
The two basic types of twisted-pair
cables
• Shielded twisted pair - is the
cable that has two or four pairs of
wires.
• Unshielded twisted pair - each pair of wire is
wrapped in metallic foil to better shield the
wires from noise
Network Topologies

• A topology is basically a map of a

network. The physical topology of
a network describes the layout of
the cables and workstations and
the location of all network
components.
• Bus Topology - is a network
architecture/map in which the
clients are connected via a
bus/shared communications line.
Ring Topology - is a network
architecture in which each client
connects to exactly two other nodes,
forming a circular path for data signals.
• Star Topology - are one of the most common
computer network architecture using UTP
cable wire. A star network consists of one
central switch, hub or computer which acts as
a center hub to transmit data signals.

• Mesh Topology - is a network architecture in
which all possible path is connected to all
nodes or clients, forming like a wire mesh. It
allows continuous connections and rerouting
around disconnected paths by hopping from
node to node until the destination is reached.
• Fill in the blanks. Write your answer in a separate sheet of
paper
1. _________ is a device that connects a client computer,
server, printer or other component to your network.
2. _________ is one of the most popular forms of network cable
used on wired networks.
3. __________ is a mounted hardware assembly that contains
ports used to connect and manage incoming and outgoing LAN
cables.
4. _________ is a device that gathers the signals from devices
that are connected to it, and then regenerates a new copy of
each signal.
5. _________ are small physical devices that join multiple
networks together.
