3G (UMTS) : By: Priyanka (Zep Infratech)

3GPP 3GPP introduced UMTS in phases. These phases were known as releases. UMTS increase transmission speed up to 2Mbps per mobile user and establish global roaming standard. Handover should be possible between UMTS cell but also between GSM and GSM.

3G (UMTS)

By: Priyanka (Zep Infratech)

3G VISION
Universal global roaming. Increased data rate. It is compatible to GSM and ISDN at the beginning. It support multimedia and its component. Increased capacity.

EVOLUTION OF 3G FROM 2G

Key Words services

.Quality of Services
3G brings more new aspects then 2G The wide services offered by 3G known as Traffic classes : Conversational (e.g. speech and video telephony)

Streaming (e.g. listening to music and watching videos) Interactive (e.g. Internet based shopping) Background (e.g. downloading mail)

Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS)

Increases transmission speed up to 2Mbps per mobile user and establish global roaming standard. It should be compatible with GSM, ATM, IP, and ISDN based networks. Handover should be possible between UMTS cell but also between UMTS and GSM. The specification of UMTS are under development in 3GPP (Third generation partnership project).

3GPP
3GPP introduced UMTS in phases. These phases were known as RELEASES. The various releases in UMTS are : Release 99 Release 4 Release 5 Release 6

RELEASES
3GPP R99 : It is now currently deployed. It lay the foundation for high speed traffic transfer in both circuit switch and packet switch modes. Defines UMTS Radio network subsystem is added to existing GSM/GPRS network. QoS was enhanced. CAMEL, OSA, WAP etc were addressed. IP was released and introduced throughout the system process.

3GPP R4 : It introduces media gateway (MGW), mobile switching centre (MSC), and the signaling gateway (SGW). It introduces the concept of separation of user and control planes (i.e. signaling and user data transport). Its main advantage is that it is moving towards a scenario which uses single transport layer for both voice and data.

RELEASE 4

3GPP R5 : It introduced the IP multimedia subsystem, Ims and High speed packet downlink access (HSDPA) IMS which was introduced in Rel 4, its capability was improved in Rel 5. IP and CAMEL ( customized application for mobile network network enhanced network) It is also called ALL IP network because all the all the IP and related protocols were used here.

RELEASE 5

3GPP R6 : It contains numerous new features. Main improvement in this phase is IMS improvement and interworking between WLAN and UMTS Multimedia broadcast/ multimedia services. Speech recognition Enable PUSH TO TALK (PTT) Number portability Scope & definition in progress.

USER EQUIPMENT
The user equipment is made of two entities: USIM (UMTS subscriber identity module) : It is a smart card that hold subscribers identity and services. It stores security algorithm like ciphering, authntication and encryption keys. ME (Mobile equipment) : It is the hardware used by the subscriber to access the network.

USIM

UTRAN
Universal terrestrial radio access network is composed of two parts: Node B : Node B : Equivalent to BTS in GSM. RNC : It allows the terminal voltage to Node B change from one cell to adjacent one without loosing connection. : Performs radio interface processing. : Can operate group of antennas or radios.

RNC : : Equivalent to BTS in GSM : It act as switching and controlling element in UTRAN. : Responsible for the use of radio resources within the RNC : responsible for handover decision. : Provide splitting function to support macro diversity for different Node Bs.

CORE NETWORK (CN)

Responsible for switching and routing calls and data connection within / to external networks. Divided into circuit switch network or packet switch network. It is composed of different parts : - MSC / VLR - HLR - SGSN - GGSN

HLR : : Stores master copy of users service profile. : Stores UE location on level of MSC / VLR / SGSN. MSC / VLR : : MSC function is to switch circuit switch transaction. : VLR holds a copy of visiting users profile and precise information of UEs location.

SGSN : : Service GPRS support node. : Includes location register information. : Stores subscription information and location information of each subscriber. GGSN : : Gateway GPRS support node. : It is equivalent to GMSC. : stores subscription and routing information of each subscriber.
