Run to the
Flashcard
As you say different TL (e.g. boat), students run
to the relevant flashcards which are stuck
around the room.
A variation of this could include taking a picture
of the flashcard. You can find a template of the
cameras on the next slide.

You will need:

● Flashcards
● Blue Tac
● (optional) Printed
Cameras
Jump the Line
Draw a line in the middle of the classroom or have
one projected on the board. You can then have each
side of the line representing either “Yes” or “No”
or the target vocabulary. You then call out the
target language and depending in the answer Ss
jump to the correct side of the line.
You will need:

● Flashcard (or
projected images)
● Board Marker
YES NO
Dog Cat
Mr. Wolf You will need:

Version 1: Teacher stand at one end of the room ● Flashcards

holding up a flashcard. Teacher then says a series
of incorrect words that are not the word on the
flashcard. Everytime the Ss think the word is wrong
they take one step towards the Teacher. When the
teacher says the correct word, Ss must run back to
their original spot without being caught by the
teacher.

Version 2: The same as above but the correct word

is said over and over again and 1 step is taken each
time the correct word is said. Ss run back when the
incorrect word is said.

You can give Ss a chance at being “Mr. Wolf” and

Teacher Says
During the ‘Presentation’ stage of your lesson, you You will need:
can assign actions or signs to each of the vocab
words. Then play a simple game of “Simon Says” ● Flashcards or
where the Ss need to then repeat the action projected images
associated with the word. This works best for
actions verbs, animals and shapes etc.
Teacher says...
Yes/No Circles
Draw circles on the ground. Mark some as “yes” You will need:
and some as “no”. You can do this by writing the
words or using different colours or ticks and ● Flashcards or
crosses. projected images
● Board marker
Teacher then shows a flashcard. Says either the
correct or incorrect word. Ss must run inside a
circle depending on whether it’s correct or not.
YES NO
Miming
After you have introduced the language to the You will need:
students, go through each flashcard and assign a
movement/mime. ● Flashcards or
projected images
Then say the flashcard and the students have to ● Board marker
produce the correct mime.
Lip Reading
Revision Activity! You will need:

Stick a set of flashcards on the board. ● Flashcards or

projected images
Choose one of the flashcards and say the word
without the use of your voice.

Students have to run and touch the correct

flashcard/sticky ball etc.
Yes/No Balls (group receptive)
You will need:
● Choose a flashcard and show it to the students.
Now say ‘Is it a ….?’ ● Flashcards or
● Demonstrate to the students that if the answer projected images
is ‘Yes’ they grab a blue ball, if the answer is ● Plastic balls
‘No’, they grab a green ball.
● Teacher plays music and the student
dance/walk round in a circle etc until the music
stops. Once the music stops they grab the

● Divide the students into two teams or groups.
You will need:
● Draw a circle on the floor for each team.
● Place the flashcards or realia in the circles - 3-6 ● Flashcards or realia
depending on the ability of students.
● Students stand behind a line drawn on the floor.
● Teacher calls out, ‘Bring teacher the…apple’
● The first student in the line must run and bring
you the object/flashcard.
● To make it hard, you can call out two objects
rather than one.

For classroom management ease and engagement,

number the students in each team (e.g. 1-5). Then call
a number and the object and the student with the
corresponding number has to get the object, rather
Colour Dictation
Give each Ss a copy of the colouring page with the You will need:
target vocabulary. Also provide plenty of crayons.
● Printed colouring
The teacher then calls out a target word and tell pages of TL
the student what to colour it. ● Crayons

For higher levels, you can have the colour legend

written instead of being said out loud. (see next
slide)
Colour:
● The car blue.
● The robot pink.
● The doll green.
● The balloon yellow.
● The bike brown.
● The kite orange.
● The train red.
● The ball purple.
Last Man Standing
This is a good game for contrasting sounds. You You will need:
need to focus on 2 or 3 letters. Write the letters on
the whiteboard in big boxes. ● none

● Stand up

P B

● Sit down

If you call the letter ‘P’ then students must stand

up. If you call the letter ‘B’, they must sit down
(this can be replaced with other actions for variety).

To make it more challenging, say a word beginning

with the letters.
In the Bucket
You will need:
● You need 2 or 3 buckets, each with a different sound or
● 2 or 3 buckets
word in front of it.
● 2 or 3 plastic balls
● You say a word, and the students must throw the ball in ● Flashcards
the corresponding bucket. (Call upon different students to
be the teacher after they are familiar with the activity.
● Rotate the vocabulary after a few attempts.
● Students are given points if the ball gets in the bucket.
Pick Up
You will need:
● Cut out 10-15 (depending on number of students) images
● Flashcards
for each flashcard
● Mini images of
● Put the big flashcards in the middle of the room flashcards
● Scatter the images, face up, all over the floor
● Play music and the students run or dance around
● Stop the music and shout a flashcard. The students then
have to find the little picture and put it on the matching
picture.
● To vary this, the second time the images can be put face
down.
Yes/No Balls (individual receptive)
You will need:
● Put the students into two teams.
● Flashcards
● Choose a flashcard and show it to the students. Now say ‘Is
● Different coloured
it a ….?’ Demonstrate to the students that if the answer is balls
‘Yes’ they grab a blue ball, if the answer is ‘No’, they grab
a green ball. First to bring the correct ball back to the
teacher gets a point.
● You can either have just 2 balls, one of each colour
Marco Polo
You will need:
● Put the flashcards around the room and a chair in the
● Flashcards
middle.
● Blindfolds
● One student (or you) sits on the chair and counts to 5 with ● Blue-tack
the blindfold on.
● The other students must walk around the room and choose
a flashcard to stand next to, before the student finishes
counting.
● When the student finishes counting to 5, they call out
‘Marco Polo - stop!’.
● All of the other students must stop.
● The student in the middle then calls out one of the
flashcards and all of the students at that flashcard must sit

Emotions Drilling
Imitate saying the TL (whilst showing the relevant You will need:
flashcard) in a range of emotions e.g. angrily,
happily, nervously… and have students copy until ● Flashcards
they have said the TL several times. ● Emotion Icons
duck
Volume Drilling
Much like Emotions Drilling, imitate saying the TL You will need:
(whilst showing the relevant flashcard) at a range
of volumes and have the students copy. In terms of ● Flashcards
CRM, have a nonverbal signal for when students ● Volume Symbols
need to stop saying the word and make them aware
of these prior to the start of the activity.
duck
Chanting
In order to help students retain new vocabulary, You will need:
you can use chants and songs which include the TL
and say/ sing these together. ● Flashcards
● Volume Symbols
Clever Parrot
You will need to model this with your TA a few times You will need:
before your Ss get it for the first time. The idea is
that you want the Ss to repeat the word if you have ● Flashcards
said it correctly. Hold up the flashcard and say an
incorrect word and have your TA signal to be quiet.
Then, say the correct word and both you and the TA
repeat the word back. Do this a few times and then
encourage the students to do the same.
Disappearing
Flashcards/Magic Eyes
You will need:
● Put a set of flashcards on the board. ● Flashcards
● Students must say each flashcard as you point ● Blue-tac
to it. After they finish repeating all of them,
remove one from the board. They must
continue to say the missing one each time they
are removed.
● By the end of the game there are no flashcards
on the board but they are still saying them.
Repeat if true
You will need:
● Put a set of flashcards on the board.
● Flashcards
● Point to one of the flashcards and say the ● Blue-tac
name.
● If you have said the correct name, the students
repeat it. If not, they stay silent.
● This activity can be made more challenging if
you say sentences e.g. It’s a lemon ice cream.

Spin the Bottle
Students are sat in a circle (or split into two circles, You will need:
working with TAs, if you have a large class). Spin
the bottle and whoever it is pointing to when it ● A toy bottle or skittle
stops has to say the correct word for the flashcard ● Flashcards
you are showing.
Pelmanism
A matching game where students are in small You will need:
groups, taking it in turns to turn over two small
flashcards. When they turn over each flashcard, ● 2 x small copies of
they must produce the language. You can prompt flashcards
them if necessary - “what is it?!”. If the two cards
match, that student keeps them. Whichever student
has the most flashcards at the end of the game is
the winner. Try to split your class for this game so
each student has plenty of talk-time.
Pass the Flashcard
Ask your TA to control the music as you sit in a You will need:
circle with your class. Hand out your flashcards (4-5
is usually enough) to students in the circle. When ● Youtube music
the music starts, students pass the flashcards ● Flashcards
around the circle to each other. When the music
stops, whichever students are holding the
flashcards have to produce the relevant TL for their
flashcard. Make sure each student speaks in turn so
that you can hear them and correct any errors.
Duck, Duck, Goose
Pin your flashcards in a visible place and ask your You will need:
students to sit in a circle. One student chooses two
examples of the TL - e.g. ‘boat’ and ‘car’. They walk ● Flashcards
around the outside of the circle, tapping each
student on the head saying one of the words “boat,
boat, boat…” when they tap a student and say
“car”, that student has to stand up and chase them
around the outside of the circle. The aim is for the
first student to run around the circle and take the
place of the second student without being caught!
dog dog cat
cat cat rabbit
Roll the Dice
Working in small groups, students take it in turns You will need:
to roll the dice and produce the relevant TL for
whatever image the dice lands on. For example, if ● Images with
your TL is ‘car, boat, truck and bike’, you will print corresponding
and tape these images on the dice. So instead of numbers
● Two large dice
traditionally rolling a number, they will roll an
image and then produce the language.

Eraser Race
Split your class into two or three teams and ask You will need:
your TA to assist you when sitting them in lines,
facing the board. Your TA will draw two or three ● board erasers,
(depending on how many teams you have) images board pen
on the board. You will show the class a flashcard
and the student at the beginning of each line will
say the relevant TL. Once they have produced the
language, they will race to the board, pick up the
eraser, erase the image and run to the back of their
line. Whichever student does this the fastest will
gain a point for their team.
Blowfish
Prepare cutouts of fish before class. Have one for You will need:
every team. The more teams the better as more
students will be involved at once. ● Fish shaped cut
outs
Draw a starting point on the floor and a finish line. ● Marker pen
Line Ss up in their teams facing the finish line and ● Flashcards
before the start line. Show the first person in each
team the TL flashcard and if they get it correct,
they get the chance to blow the paper fish once.
Continue until the first team gets their fish across
the finishing line.
Pronunciation Dice
You will need:
● Divide the students into 2 teams.
● 1 Large Dice
● You will need a dice with sounds on each side/face, which
● Flashcards
correspond to the vocabulary.
● Give each team 6 flashcards with words beginning with
each sound e.g. p -pig.
● Draw each team a circle at the front of the classroom to
put their flashcards in.
● The teams take turns throwing the dice and must choose a
flashcard with the correct starting (or final for higher
levels) sound, saying the word out loud.
● If they already have the sound, then they miss a turn.
● The first team to put all the flashcards in their circle is the
winner.
ESL Hopscotch
You will need:
● Draw two hopscotch grids (6 squares or circles) on the
● A board pen
floor
● Flashcards
● Place 6 flashcards on the floor face up in a straight line ● Dice
between the two grids
● Students then race the hopscotch line, saying each
flashcard out loud as they land next to it. Teacher listens
for any mistakes or skipped words. If the student makes a
mistake then they have to restart.
● The winner is the first team to have every member
complete the task successfully.
● Alternatively, the student rolls the dice and they hop to the
number and say the flashcard you hold up.
Telephone/Chinese Whispers
You will need:
● Line up the blue matts in two parallel lines.
● Flashcards
● Have the students sit in tow lines.
● Copy the flashcards so that you have two sets.
● Stick one set to the whiteboard (or the opposite end of
the line.
● Hand/Show the student at the end of the line the
flashcard.
● The student says the flashcard and whispers it to the
person next to them, who in turn repeats it and passes
it on.
● When it gets to the end of the line, the final student
stands up and slaps the correct flashcard.
● The student then moves to the end of the line, so that
they are now the first student.
Noughts and Crosses
You will need:
● Draw a large grid, as you would for naughts and
● Flashcards
crosses.
● Board marker
● Put a flashcard in each square.
● Divide the students into two teams.
● Each team takes it in turns to choose a flashcard and if
they say the word/sentence correctly, you remove the
flashcard and draw their symbol in the square.
● They must try to get 3 in a row.
